General Statement of Duties:
Under general supervision, performs skilled work at the journeyman level in the trade of painter and related job duties.
Distinguishing Features of Classification:
This is skilled work requiring efficient performance of all duties typical for the trade of painter working with all types of paint and finishes on a variety of surfaces.
Examples of Work:
- Prepares surfaces for painting or other coatings including cleaning, scraping, filling, repairing, sanding and masking; performs exterior and interior caulking.
- Estimates job-related materials needed to complete assignment.
- Mixes and prepares paint and allied coatings.
- Safely erects and dismantles scaffolds and ladders; operates aerial lifts; paints from scaffolds and ladders.
- Applies (brushes, rolls and sprays) appropriate primers, sealers, paint, allied coatings and finishes to all types of interior and exterior building surfaces, fixtures and furnishings.
- Ensures proper care in the use and maintenance of equipment and supplies; promotes workplace safety; cleans and maintains brushes and other related equipment; properly stores and/or disposes of all unused paint and related material.
- Assists Glass Technician with installation of glass; cuts and installs glass.
- Properly stores and/or disposes all unused paint and related material.
- Refinishes furniture including wood surface preparation, staining and sealing.
- Installs or replaces vinyl floor tile and cove.
- Communicates daily to update and respond to work-related routine and emergency information and/or other work instructions and administrative information using, but not limited to, two-way radio, and E-mail.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Environmental Factors/Occupational Exposures:
- The physical environment requires this classification to work outside in both extreme heat and cold conditions as well as conditions that are both wet/humid, dry and during times when temperatures are below 32°F for more than one-hour periods. The environment may frequently include dust and/or airborne particles and, occasionally, loud noise, chemicals, gases, fumes and vibration. For this reason, employees are required to wear designated personal protective equipment to include, but not limited to, ANSI-approved safety eyewear, gloves, hearing protection, filter cartridge respiratory equipment and footwear to prevent exposure to hazardous materials, noise, dust and/or airborne particles.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Requires knowledge of painting materials and equipment; ability to mix and blend paints to achieve proper color match; ability to cut and install various types of glass using putty/glazing compound and/or rubber type moldings; ability to repair, replace, and install various types of vinyl floor tile and coving; ability to refinish furniture including the stripping, filling and the application of varnish, lacquer or other finish materi
