Ashland has an exciting opportunity for a Synthetic Polymer Chemist to join Ashland Specialty Ingredients G. P. as a member of our Applied Research Team in Global R&D. This position will report to a Staff Scientist/Research Scientist.

 

This position will be based in Wilmington, DE.

The responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Setup, operate and maintain laboratory equipment used in the synthesis of new products
  • Work with scientists to optimize synthesis experiments to meet new product specifications
  • Work closely with process and production engineers to transfer data and knowledge to support scale-up of new products
  • Contribute to writing of technical reports and presentations
  • Maintain laboratory notebooks and logbooks in accordance with company guidelines
  • Comply with company procedural guidelines, laboratory procedures, and safety programs

 

In order to be qualified for this role, you must possess the following:

  • Minimum two-year associate degree in the physical or life sciences (e.g. chemistry, physics, biology, applied science)
  • Minimum of three (3) years of industry experience working in a research laboratory or manufacturing plant
  • Good written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to work in highly collaborative cross-functional environment involving global labs and manufacturing sites
  • Strong computer skills with ability to enter and manage data in spreadsheets and reports
  • Good track record of safety practices
  • Applicants must be authorized to work in the United States

 

The following skill sets are preferred by the business unit:

  • Bachelors degree in physical or life sciences (i.e. chemistry, physics, materials science, biochemistry, biology)
  • Strong working knowledge of synthetic organic chemistry
  • Experience in synthesis of water-soluble polymers (e.g. cellulose ethers, guar derivatives, etc.)
  • Experience in different types of polymerization techniques (solution, emulsion, & precipitation)
  • Experience in the synthesis of polymer ingredients for Pharmaceutical, Personal Care, or Coatings application areas
