CONTEXT OF THE JOB:

Student Health Services (SHS) is the primary student health unit on the University of Delaware Campus. Situated within the Division of Student Life, SHS provides essential services and support to students and campus stakeholders to enhance the development of personal and social responsibility and to foster safe, healthy, inclusive, and supportive communities at UD. SHS partners with students and staff to develop vibrant inclusive environments which encourage student success and engagement, a culture of care for all members, values-congruent decision-making, and the cultivation of skills and knowledge so students may become citizens and leaders in our increasingly global society. Staff members support the Mission and Vision of Student Health Services as well as those of the Division of Student Life to ensure student success.

The Primary Care Provider reports to the Medical Director of Student Health Services and is responsible for the delivery of primary medical care to University students on an outpatient basis. Makes specialist referrals and confers with patients, parents, families, consulting physicians, and University personnel as appropriate. Consults with the Executive Director, Medical Directors, Director of Nursing, Practice Manager, other SHS providers, nurses, and staff as appropriate. Responsible for maintaining timely and accurate medical records. Responsible for maintaining medical licensure and professional competence.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

+ Provide direct patient care as a primary care NP/PA.

+ Obtain accurate patient histories, perform relevant physical exams, and develop appropriate treatment plans.

+ Order, interpret, and follow up on radiology studies, laboratory studies, and specialist referrals.

+ Perform minor surgical procedures as needed.

+ Complete medical record documentation in a proper and timely fashion per SHS Policies and Procedures.

+ Communicate regularly with patients via in-person office visits, telehealth, telephone, and patient portal messages.

+ Communicate regularly with specialists and ancillary services for specific patient scenarios.

+ Communicate effectively with emergency medical personnel for acute patient concerns.

+ Work with other departments within the Division of Student Life to coordinate care for students. This will include the Center for Counseling and Student Development, Health Promotion, Disability Support Services, Dean’s Office, Residence Life and Housing, Dining Services, among others.

+ Help promote and guide the integration of wellness services for students across university resources.

+ Focus on education of University students to promote general health and wellness.

+ Provide verbal and written education to patients.

+ Provide verbal, written, and didactic education to other clinical staff as indicated and as requested.

+ Serve on committees as desired and as requested by the Medical Director.

+ Contribute to improvements in clinical workflows.

+ Maintain medical competence through appropriate continuing medical education courses and affiliations with medical boards and societies as necessary for full, unrestricted clinical licensure.

+ Show continued professional development through continuing medical education programs and training.

+ Delegate appropriate tasks.

+ Other appropriate duties as assigned by the Executive Director and/or SHS Leadership team.

QUALIFICATIONS:

+ Currently licensed and certified as a Physician Assistant or Adult/Family Advanced Practice Registered Nurse in the State of Delaware.

+ Evidence of completion of a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant program from an accredited educational institution.

+ Three years of relevant position-equivalent clinical experience.

+ Current basic CPR certification.

+ A commitment to the development and growth of students in higher education.

+ Ability to work effectively with a diverse campus community of students.

+ Ability to convey clinical information to patients in accessible terms.

+ Strong, communicative, and human relations skills.

+ Ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community and rapidly changing technical environment.

+ Experience with minor procedures (suturing, incision and drainage, etc), and reading x-rays and EKGs preferred.

+ Previous college health, urgent care, or primary care medical group practice experience is desirable.

+ Demonstrated understanding and consideration of the differing needs and concerns of individuals with varying identities, cultures, and backgrounds.

Special Qualifications:

+ Successful completion of criminal background check required.

+ Successful credentialing by the Student Health Executive or Medical Director and verification of credentialing information through the National Practitioner Data Bank and the American Medical Association required.
