Position Title: Mechanical Engineer – Advanced Measurements

Brief Business Summary

DuPont Mobility & Materials (M&M) business develops advanced polymeric engineering materials for use in automotive, industrial, and consumer applications. The Application Development and Technical Services (ADTS) group supports these customer application developments by providing direct engineering support and technical data.

Job Description

The CAE/Design group consists of engineers who apply state-of-the-art computer modeling techniques and world-class mechanical measurements to support customer applications with predictive material models and design guidance.

M&M is seeking a creative Mechanical Engineer interested in developing innovative approaches to testing materials and parts in a world-class engineering lab. The ideal candidate will take novel approaches to design custom test fixtures, design data acquisition strategies, write/use scripts for post-processing data, and develop material models to support our predictive engineering effort.

This is a lab-based role and will require the employee to be on-site at least 80% of the time.

Job Responsibilities

+ Develop and execute novel complex tests , requiring use of sophisticated instrumentation and development of new methods

+ Interpret and understand test results , incorporating a strong foundation of fundamental material knowledge, descriptive models of material behavior, and mathematical software

+ Translate results via effective communication across cross-functional teams or customers

Minimum Job Requirements

B.S in Mechanical Engineering (or related field) plus 2 -5 years or M.S. in Mechanical Engineering (or related field) with experience performing mechanical testing with demonstrated ability in the following areas:

Testing

+ Familiarity with conventional mechanical property measurements on various materials. Should be proficient in use of Instron and/or MTS servo hydraulic, ElectroPuls and screw machines

+ Understanding of instrumentation used in mechanical measurement programs and transducer technologies such as strain gages, load cells, pressure transducers, thermocouples, and other non-contact strain instrumentation such as digital image correlation (DIC) or video-based extensometers

+ Experience or interest in learning high-speed photography and DIC

+ Demonstrated knowledge in fundamental understanding of computers and technical software, including familiarity with “WINDOWS”, “Word”, “PowerPoint”, and “Excel”

Interpretation

+ Familiarity with polymeric and elastomeric materials and behavior and anisotropic composite materials

+ Familiarity with understanding time-dependent (creep, stress-relaxation, strain-rate) and temperature-dependent) material behavior

+ Familiarity with failure mechanisms of materials

Communication

+ Demonstrated written and oral communications skills

+ Demonstrated ability to coordinate projects with cross-functional teams

+ Demonstrated interpersonal and people development skills

+ Demonstrated ability to work as a team member in a respectful manner in a diverse work environment

+ Demonstrated ability to work in an orderly and timely manner

The following experience is desirable:

+ Technical software that can include TestWorks, WaveMatrix, SolidWorks, DASYLab, MatLab, Labview, FEA software, CAD, Python

+ Experience with mechanical design and fabrication

+ Machine shop background and experience

+ Basic programming skills
