The GM&T WBU delivers technological solutions (molecules, equipment and services) to support the new markets of energy transition, maritime logistics and scientific exploration, in order to accelerate Air Liquide sustainable growth.

To support the energy transition, GM&T brings environmentally friendly solutions to the clean energy market with hydrogen energy and Bio-Natural Gas for vehicles, refrigerated transport using nitrogen, but also the treatment and injection of Biogas into the energy grid as a local power source.

As a player of the deep tech sector, GM&T commercializes technologies dedicated to Space, Aerospace and scientific exploration. GM&T also supplies gases for players in of the maritime sector and provides logistics for cryogenic transportation by sea of value added molecules, such as helium.

Job Responsibilities

+ Working within the Advanced Technology Solutions (ATS) group, the Associate Development Chemist will support Analytical Chemists and Developmental Technologists with sample collection, preparation, and analysis, as well as equipment operation, cleaning, and maintenance.

+ The work will be related to developing new products, materials, & processes within ATS.

+ Serve as a safety role model; promote a high level of safety awareness; adhere to and support the continuous improvement of safety practices / procedures.

+ Prepare samples to ASTM procedures for analytical measurements (DSC, TGA/FT-IR, FT-IR, GPC, HPLC, GC, DMA, Instron, Rheometer & Viscometer).

+ Document new test procedures used in the lab as they are developed by the ATS team.

+ Utilize various analytical techniques for routine and Quality Control analysis (product performance tests, DSC, TGA, KF, GC, UV, etc.).

+ Assist in polymer/solvent handling, dope preparation, fiber spinning.

+ Assist with the operation, upkeep and cleanup of Developmental Spinning Units.

+ Perform calibration and routine cleaning and preventive maintenance of instruments and analytical / spinning equipment.

+ Assemble tube/pipe fitting and other mechanical system samples.

+ Storage, handling and disposal of hazardous and non-hazardous chemicals and cylinder gasses.

+ Ensure appropriate laboratory supply stocks.

+ Prepare and communicate analysis and test results in a timely fashion to support the manufacturing process; ensure accuracy and consistency of data.

+ Collaborate effectively with other personnel and project teams including personnel from R&D.

+ Contributes to team effort by accomplishing related results as needed.

Required

+ BS in Chemistry, Materials Science, or related field.

+ Analytical laboratory experience.

+ Proficient with Microsoft Office and Google platforms.

+ Strong safety mindset with respect to testing and chemical / gas handling.

+ Ability to work independently and in small teams, in a way that enhances team dynamics.

+ Able to interface with peers and team members (local and remote) to provide critical information and obtain results.

+ Previous experience with Laboratory Analytical Equipment and/or routine hollow fiber testing.

+ Familiarity of QMS requirements as defined by ISO 9001:2008 (E).

+ Familiarity with hollow fiber membranes and polymeric manufacturing processes, and / or epoxy composite fabrication and manufacturing processes.

+ Knowledge of ASTM procedures for analytical measurements (DSC, TGA/FT-IR, FT-IR, GPC, HPLC, GC, DMA, Instron, Rheometer & Viscometer).

Preferred Competencies

+ Strong practical inclination in analytical methods for polymeric and/or epoxy resins and/or composite materials.

Working Conditions

+ The individual’s working environment will vary depending on specific activities on any given day, but generally will rotate between office, laboratory, and membrane manufacturing facility areas.

+ Fitness for duty including but not limited to the ability to lift 30 lbs.

+ The individual will be required to wear appropriate PPE as mandated by the facility.

+ The type of PPE required on a day to day basis will be determined by the types of chemicals that are being studied / evaluated in the lab and may be more than is typically used in the plant – such as a PAPR (Powered Air Purifying Respirator).

+ Occasional business travel may be required (<10%) to other Air Liquide sites (such as Woburn, MA), key suppliers, customers, off-site training, or partners as needed.
