Job Summary

Functions as a technical IP/Data Network and Cybersecurity Engineer. With minimal oversight, while taking direction from Sr. Network Engineer(s) and Network Architect(s) to develop and apply intermediate to moderate network concepts and approaches to unique packetized network design and engineering problems. May lead engineering staff on projects of medium to high complexity or serve as a technical resource providing knowledge and expertise.

Key Responsibilities

This Senior Network Engineer will be responsible for portions of IP network planning, assessment, design, implementation and optimization for Black & Veatch clients. Provides intermediate technical support to business development and pursuit activities, including assisting in the creation of proposal, scope, level of effort estimation and implementation plans. Participates in project execution and technical delivery.

Key duties include:

• Configuration, installation, commission, integration and testing of Optical Transport and IP/Data Network devices such as DWDM, SONET, OTN, routers, switches, firewalls, cable management, and rack power distribution.

• Complete site survey assessments, evaluation and documentation.

• Evaluate, refine, and implement network designs.

• Communicating directly with clients (sometimes non-technical clients) to identify current and future network and telecommunication needs

• Collaborate with network engineers, assist network team members.

• Assesses and understand how industry standards for models apply to network design and implementation best practices

• Participates as technical projects and application roll-outs

• Responsible for developing and adhering to all Design Engineer quality processes and procedures

• Work hand-in-hand with project management on technical issues

• May assists in developing and managing scope, schedule and budget requirements

• Supports continuous improvement of project and internal processes

• Candidate should be versed with change management, maintenance window activities and rollback procedures as they relate to migration strategies.

• Documentation and processes development

• May validate work of peer network engineers

• Capable of optimizing day-to-day operational stability with the continual need to improve the service and deploy new services, processes and technologies

• Support efforts related to utility IP communication systems

• Understands, advocates, and supports IT and OT strategies

• Proactively support the pursuit and development of current and new business opportunities

• Ability to identify issues and provide feedback for best practices implementation

Preferred Qualifications

Typically, a minimum of 3+ years network related work experience. Utility experience preferred.

Skills and Preferred Technical Competencies:

• Strong knowledge of IP and Data Network Design and engineering design principles, guides and standards.

• Candidate must be a self-starter and able to work with minimum supervision

Optical Transport Skills:

• Strong knowledge of Optical Transport Network Design and engineering design principles, guides and standards.

• Strong experience in installation, commissioning and integration of network devices and infrastructure such as optical transport network devices, fiber and cable management, and rack power distribution (i.e. AC/DC circuit breaker panels).

• Strong Hands-on experience configuring, testing and evaluating transport networks such as SONET, DWDM/OTN, and Packet Transport.

• Strong Experience or knowledge using 2 or more of such tools as OTDRs, Fiber Characterization Test Sets, Optical Channel Spectrum Analyzers, Light Meters, TDM/Packet Test Sets and other related transport apparatus.

• Strong experience in translating design and evaluation of Optical transport and Data Networks.

• Strong ability to evaluate, refine, and implement network designs.

General:

• Strong network documentation skills, including, but not limited to the development and updating of network drawings, rack layouts, cut sheets and various technical deliverables.

• Strong experience with performing site surveys.

• Strong experience with performing procurement, installation, implementation and commissioning of network equipment.

• Strong written communication skills especially pertaining to creating and publishing professional processes and procedures, including System Requirements, Method of Procedures (MOPs), work packages, Request for Information (RFI) and Request for Proposals (RFP), among other related deliverables.

• Knowledge of Optical Transport technologies (i.e. DWDM, OTN, SONET, TDM, Carrier Ethernet, ect.) a plus

• Knowledge of telecommunications technologies and design

• Strong ability to scope engineering deliverable content

• Knowledge of industry and technology trends

• Experience with technical proposals

• Knowledge of network power systems and requirements

• Knowledge of, or experience with configuring RF/WiMax/Microwave radio equipment a plus

• Cybersecurity knowledge and experience is desirable.

• Translating business requirements to technical network design specifications for implementation

• Strong understanding and interpretation of telecom principles and technologies

Minimum Qualifications
