What You’ll Contribute

The UX Lead plays a critical role in helping Sallie Mae become the best-in-class consumer financial services company. The ideal candidate is experienced enough to quickly grasp the complexities of transactional ubiquitous applications and platforms (web and mobile), possess a curious mind, and doesn’t miss an opportunity to learn and inspire others.

As a UX Lead Designer, you will leverage your deep understanding of research and experience design for digital products. You’ll be at the forefront of our efforts and be directly responsible for decisions. This is a hands-on design and team management role. You’ll work alongside talented and passionate teammates from diverse backgrounds in a multi-disciplinary team that includes other researchers, product designers, content writers, product managers, engineers, and business partners who share your passion for delivering unique and innovative digital products and services of all kinds.

A UX Lead is instrumental in developing the strategic UX vision and communicating that narrative across the business. You’ll be a key contributor and a mentor in the design Agile team to lead all UX activities such as analyzing business hypotheses and features, validating design recommendations, creating high and low fidelity wireframes and prototypes to support design to code implementation.

What You’ll Do

+ Strategy and Execution

+ Establishes the vision, strategy, and execution of the solution, including site maps, information architecture, concept models, user personas or profiles, user scenarios, wireframes, task flows, site inventory, interaction design modeling and specifications

+ Demonstrates outstanding ability to balance business goals and user needs in the production of the interactive design solutions

+ Manages through shifting priorities to provide clear direction and input on product prioritization and support early product definition

+ Supports early product definition by working with partners to facilitate discovery sessions that uncover customer pain points and opportunities

+ Transforms complex problems into simple and understandable solutions. Communicate those solutions to leaders and peers.

+ Applies working knowledge of design patterns while being able to make recommendations for better design and user experience based on industry best practices

+ Compiles and shares usability finding with teammates, partners, and stakeholders to inform and shape design decisions

+ Leadership

+ Leads cross-functional teams through a user-centered design approach, both hands-on and through facilitation

+ Mentors and guides team members in strategy, research, alignment, analysis, design critiques, and design execution tasks

+ Navigates conflict resolution within your team as well as within projects, teams, and partner relationships

+ Manages the design process, drive external and internal team decisions, track risks and issues

+ Leads cross-functional workshops and design thinking exercises

+ Organizes learning efforts to validate design assumptions and collect user feedback for enhancing user experience

+ Collaboration

+ Contributes to and lead the evolution of the design system/pattern library

+ Works closely with the marketing and product development team to augment and synthesize business requirements

+ Guides and conducts learning activities and user research that combine generative/evaluative/design research approaches in support of ongoing discovery and delivery goals

What You Have

Minimum Education, Skills and Experience Required

+ Bachelor’s degree in design related field or equivalent experience

+ 6+ years of experience in Design, Human Computer Interaction, or equivalent professional experience

+ 4+ years of mobile-first design across devices, from desktop to mobile, and across systems, from browser-based websites and apps to native apps for mobile

+ 2+ years of experience managing a team and guiding performance and development of other designers

+ Strong portfolio of work demonstrating experience leading/managing the design of complex systems across multiple platforms

+ Extensive experience working with business and technical teams, to understand and translate project requirements into complete user experiences

+ A solid grasp of user-centered design, design thinking, workshop facilitation, user research, rapid prototyping, and heuristic analysis

+ Superior ability to communicate design processes, ideas, and solutions clearly and effectively to teams and partners

+ Direct experience with usability testing (Observation and analysis, test-script creation, moderating, producing summary of finding)

+ Ability to distill complicated problems defined through research into simple and elegant solutions

+ Solid understanding of industry best practices for SEO and front-end development, accessibility (WCAG Compliance) standards, responsive and mobile design principles.

+ Proficiency in Sketch, InVision, Adobe Creative Suite (XD, Photoshop, Illustrator)

+ Ability to thrive in fast paced, dynamic environment

Preferred Education, Skills and Experience

+ Experience designing complex transactional applications for Financial Services, Pharma, Healthcare – Why Pharma and Healthcare?

+ Advanced knowledge of mobile users’ unique requirements and restrictions as well as Android or iOS device specifications

+ Working knowledge of or other user research platforms
