Overview

The Energy Processes & Materials Group within the Energy and Environment Directorate at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory is currently seeking research and development engineers in the field of grid energy storage. This position is for a Chemical engineer, Mechanic engineer, System engineer, Materials scientist, Chemist, and Electrochemist in a related field of study with experience in developing electrochemical energy storage technology and systems for stationary energy storage. The focus of this position will be on the system level that includes stack design, assembly, testing, system engineering, modeling. Experience in computational and data-driven modeling is needed for techno-economic and use case analysis under practical grid applications. The project work encompasses aqueous and nonaqueous electrolytes analysis, electrodes and bipolar plates study, cationic and anionic membranes, subsequent flow battery device fabrication, system integration, electrochemical testing, performance validation, accelerated test, degradation analysis, and related market analysis.

Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be responsible for developing redox flow battery models capable of integrating material properties, device design features, performance prediction, and cost analysis in coordination with the R&D scientist, engineer team, and project manager. They will also prepare manuscripts for publication, present their work internally and externally at national/international conferences, and develop new ideas for funded research.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

+ BS/BA with 5 years of experience

+ MS/MA with 3 years of experience

+ PhD with 1 year of experience

Preferred Qualifications:

Must possess a Master’s degree in Chemical Engineering, Mechanic Engineering, Chemistry, Materials Science, Physics, or other related fields. Prior experience developing novel energy storage systems and technologies or energy conversion materials and devices, including electrode/electrolyte/membrane materials development, electrochemical characterization and analysis, and system integration, are preferred. Experience with stack and system design, modeling, assembly and testing of the redox flow batteries/PEM fuel cells > 5kW is a plus. Expertise in techno-economic and market analysis is recommended. The successful candidate must have demonstrated technical aptitude in a laboratory environment, including electrochemical testing and characterization techniques, experimental setup, operation, and data analysis, as well as a demonstrated ability in technical communication. Good written and oral communication skills and an ability to collaborate effectively in a teaming environment are required.
