Job Summary (Primary function)
The IP Paralegal will assist and interact closely with IP department attorneys and a patent agent who handle worldwide IP portfolios related to the company's products and technologies.
Essential Functions of the Job (Key responsibilities)
IP Formalities: prepare/process and obtain signatures for various formal patent and trademark related documents, including Declarations, Powers of Attorney, Assignments and other documents as required by the US and foreign jurisdictions.
Support IP litigation-related matters, including coordinating e-discovery, managing legal holds, assisting with subpoena responses, managing internal litigation files and tracking the status of pending litigation.
Assist in the procurement of IP-related contracts such as consulting, confidentiality, material transfer, and sponsored research agreements, including tracking their progress and interacting with various legal and non-legal functions as needed.
Assisting with opening of new IP matters and related vendor purchase orders, and manage, organize, and maintain IP department paper and electronic files.
Assist with miscellaneous IP department-related projects and duties as assigned.
Qualifications (Minimal acceptable level of education, work experience, and competency)
A bachelor's degree or a post-secondary program with law-related coursework.
7+ years' experience in a law firm and/or corporate IP department supporting patent and trademark prosecution and IP litigation, with pharmaceutical industry experience preferred.
State-approved accredited paralegal certification preferred.
Strong understanding of and experience with administrative procedures in the United States Patent & Trademark office, and a working knowledge of administrative procedures in foreign patent offices such as the European Patent Office and Japanese Patent Office.
Commissioned as a Delaware state notary public, or a willingness to become commissioned as a Delaware state notary public.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to work both independently and as part of a team. Experience in communicating with foreign IP professionals is a plus.
Demonstrated proficiency in Adobe and Microsoft Office, including advanced Word and Excel skills.
Strong organizational skills and attention to detail, with the ability to balance multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment and manage confidential information with discretion.
