EQUIPMENT OPERATOR I

 

DUTIES AND FEATURES OF THE CLASS:

The employee in this class operates a variety of automotive equipment and performs manual tasks in connection with such operations.  Work is performed under immediate supervision.  Weekends, holidays and emergency call-in work is required.  Twenty-four hour on-call by beeper is required.

 

 

EXAMPLES OF WORK:

Operates a backhoe to move earth, clear land, rough grade, dig trenches and perform other types of excavation work; operates a dump truck to move earth and other materials; inspects, cleans, lubricates, changes oil and makes minor repairs on equipment; operates tractor and trailer to haul sludge or sewage; operates and maintains a sewer cleaning truck; operates a sewer jet to clean out clogged sewer lines; maintains sewer line laterals, pumps stations, wet wells and treatment tanks; reads blueprints; keeps accurate records for billing purposes; keeps daily records; performs related work as required.

 

ADA REQUIREMENTS:

This is heavy work requiring the exertion of 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects; work requires climbing, stooping, crawling, lifting, grasping, and repetitive motions; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, use of measuring devices, operation of machines, and operation of motor vehicles or equipment; the worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, extreme cold, extreme heat, noise, hazards, atmospheric conditions, and oils.

 

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

Good knowledge and skill in the operation of heavy equipment; good knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions of work; ability to follow oral and written directions; ability to make minor repairs and adjustments to heavy equipment; dependability; good physical condition.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

 

Minimum HS diploma or GED with experience in the operations of heavy equipment supplemented by specialized equipment handling courses or any equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.  Minimum of a valid Class “B” driver’s license.

  • 35-hour work week (Monday - Friday 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.)

  • Possession of a valid driver’s license
  • As a condition of accepting employment, the person selected for this position shall join and pay dues to the labor organization or may, instead not join but pay a service fee no greater than the dues.  The labor organization has been elected by employees as their representative for collective bargaining and other work related purposes.
