PLAN REVIEWER I
DUTIES AND FEATURES OF THE CLASS
The incumbent in this class performs reviews of residential building plans for new single-family dwellings, duplexes, townhouses and additions to ensure minimum compliance with statutes, codes and ordinances. Plan reviews are conducted independently in accordance with departmental regulations and established technical standards. Supervision is under the general direction of the manager.
EXAMPLES OF WORK
Reviews residential building plans and other related documents for adequacy to determine proper foundation support, structural and safety components in conformance to minimum code requirements; extensive public contact with authorizing and discussing the acceptance or rejection of proposed plans with contractors/builders and property owners; answers inquiries from the public regarding plan submittal requirements; prepares reports and assists in efficient record tracking of plan submittals; appears in court as necessary; attends meetings as required; performs field work and on site reviews as required; performs other duties as assigned.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Thorough knowledge of the materials, methods, and practices used in building construction; ability to recognize inadequate construction practices or hazardous conditions and recommends effective corrective measures; ability to read and interpret building construction plans and specifications; ability to enforce codes and regulations firmly, tactfully and impartially; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, contractors, property owners, representatives from other agencies and the public; ability to keep abreast of changes relating to building technologies, code requirements and enforcement procedures and systems change; ability to improve skills through additional training or evaluation as deemed necessary to remain effective in performance of duties.
QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum High School Diploma or GED and at least five (5) years’ experience in a building construction trade is required or any equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities; working knowledge of Microsoft Office Products (Outlook, Word, Excel) and related pertinent applications; must possess or able to obtain a Residential Plans Examiner Certification or equivalent by passing an International Code Council (ICC) certification exam within 12 months of employment; excellent customer service and organizational skills; excellent verbal and written communication skills.
