Job Description


To supervise Patient Escort Services activities and staff to facilitate departmental operations, patient and equipment transport and participation in patient scheduling,



Supervises and coordinates daily activities of Patient Escort Services and clinical runner activities.

Prioritizes and processes service requests according to departmental procedures, monitors the status, and verifies completion of the tasks. Maintains knowledge of service delays and updates department personnel and nursing units as needed. Performs service recovery and rounds on internal/external customers.

Utilizes priority list and specific departmental policies in conjunction with on-demand requests to coordinate the dissemination of personnel for patient transports.

Reviews requests for service to assure tasks are handled in the most efficient manner; considering the available resources of dispatched personnel, transporters assigned to specific areas, and Clinical Runners performing routine rounds.

Assists in determining work schedules and methods/procedures; and assigns duties to subordinates, and monitors work performance to assure completion of all tasks with emphasis on safety, efficiency, and continuous improvement.

Instructs, orients, and trains employees in all aspects of their work; participates in performance evaluation, coaching, discipline, and all recommendations for selection, placement, and promotions.

Monitors and adjusts staffing patterns and schedules as necessary to accommodate both planned and unexpected alterations in workload and/or resource availability.

Prepares and maintains reports of daily activities and documentation to support departmental requirements including materials pertaining to work performance, recognition, discipline, maintenance records, incident investigations, and information for routine reports and special projects.

Supports a safe environment for all patients, visitors, and staff. Adheres to and ensures compliance with all safety policies and procedures, emphasizing promotion of safety related information and prevention of accidents and injuries. Resolves and/or reports, in a timely manner, any unsafe activities, conditions, hazards, or safety violations.

Ensures the safety and reliability of all equipment by monitoring usage and related logs/records, following the preventive maintenance program and cleaning schedule, requisitioning necessary repairs, and maintaining documentation of all equipment activities.

Ensures that all appropriate personnel have access to adequate equipment and supplies to complete their assigned work. Verifies receipt and return of keys and other items requiring security.

Interacts with ancillary and nursing personnel involved in or affecting departmental operations and the delivery of services to internal and external customers. Maintains communication with the remainder of management as necessary to assure quality and continuity of services according to all applicable standards.

Responds to inquiries and concerns of the staff and customer departments, initiating prompt follow-up, documentation, and notification of others as necessary.

Supports department compliance with all State, Federal, and regulatory agency requirements, such that the facilities continue to meet standards for licensure and accreditation.

Performs staff duties as necessary to instruct or demonstrate desired performance, and to support workload requirements.

Serves as a leader and a role model for staff, demonstrating Core Values and a commitment to service excellence in all interactions with patients, visitors, and staff.

Performs assigned work safely, adhering to established departmental safety rules and practices. Reports to supervisor, in a timely manner, any unsafe activities, conditions, hazards, or safety violations that may cause injury to oneself, other employees, patients and visitors.

Performs the dispatch function when necessary.

Performs other related duties as required.

Associate Degree Preferred

Minimum of two years in patient transport and/or similar healthcare experience preferred.
