Job Description

I. Position Summary

Under the direction of the Electrical Supervisor and Journeymen Linemen, the

Groundman/Apprentice is responsible for building, maintaining, and repairing overhead

and underground distribution lines within the scope of his/her training in a safe and

efficient manner withing accepted standards, approved policies, and procedures.

II. Essential Job Functions

● Use apprentice-level knowledge of electrical line work to safely construct and

maintain electrical distribution lines.

● Drives and operates necessary equipment to frame and set poles, lay wire,

connect and disconnect services, and tree trimming. Equipment includes, but is

not limited to: shovels, rakes, tamps, various hand tools, line trucks, bucket

trucks, drills, chainsaws, extended sticks, shotgun sticks, hydraulic tools,

backhoes, forklifts, skid steers, dump trucks, trenchers, etc. Also, must wear

proper PPE as required for assigned duties, which includes: hard hat, safety

glasses, ear plugs, leather gloves, rubber gloves and sleeves, safety reflective

vest, FR clothing, safety toe shoes, fall arrest, fall arrest safety harness, climbing

belt, and climbing gaffs.

● Assist linemen in performing line patrol.

● Replace and repair service drops, as needed.

● Install service, connect, disconnect and reconnect as assigned.

● Assist with street light maintenance as assigned.

● Progressively learn the skills to become a journeyman lineman.

● Physical demands: Must be able to perform the activities required in all phases

of distribution line maintenance and construction. Position requires long hours

in various conditions while working, climbing, walking, stooping, or standing

often in awkward positions. Physical exertion is required by pulling, pushing, or

carrying equipment and material of up to 100 pounds.

● Must have, or be able to obtain a Class B CDL license.

● Work environment: Outside work in all kinds of weather will be required. This

often involves irregular and long hours including nights, weekends, and

holidays. Must be available in emergency conditions.

● Responsible for keeping vehicles and equipment orderly and clean.

● Be on call as assigned.

● Perform any other duties assigned in order to fulfill the objectives of the Town

of Smyrna.
