Job Description

This is an exciting opportunity to lead the Global Chemical Mechanical Planarization Technologies (CMPT) R&D Organization. The role is based in Newark, DE with additional R&D/Application sites in Hsinchu, Taiwan and Cheonan, Korea. CMPT is the world leading supplier of CMP pads and slurries to the semiconductor industry. As a premier Partner of Choice to the industry, the R&D group develops a wide range of innovative pad and slurry products – while also providing associated application, analytical, and fundamentals knowhow- that enable logic and memory chip performance and cost of ownership benefits to a global customer base.

The Technical Sr. Manager will be responsible for managing and leading a global team of talented Technical Managers, Scientists, Engineers and Technologists across groups that specialize in pad and slurry product development, application engineering, advanced characterization and fundamentals, rapid customer sampling and process development, and scale up engineering. This leader works seamlessly across the business marketing, sales, manufacturing, and product quality functions to commercialize and support the pad and slurry product lines.

KEY ROLE ACTIVITIES:

The Technical Sr Manager works cooperatively with the business marketing team to develop the pad and slurry new product pipelines, and is responsible to deliver performance- and cost-enabled products from assessment, development, optimization, and through commercialization. In parallel the R&D team is responsible to deliver: (1) A robust IP strategy patent portfolio to protect and sustain new products and process technologies (2) Novel/enabling raw materials and new manufacturing platforms in partnership with the Manufacturing Technology function; (3) CMP polishing protocols to optimize the performance of pad/slurry products with customer-standard tools and specified consumables; (4) Analytical characterization of the products as supplied and post-use under customer-specified conditions; (5) Fundamental understanding of the CMP process physics and performance optimization with CMPT products; and (6) Comprehensive characterization and resolution of quality issues raised by customers that are associated with CMPT products. The candidate must be able to drive and foster collaboration across CMPT sites (Newark, DE, Hsinchu, Taiwan, and Cheonan, Korea), and maintain close and productive relationships within the CMP technology functions of leading customers, insights from which feed directly into the new product roadmap strategy for CMPT.

+ Regularly lead technical review meetings with key customers to showcase CMPT’s products and technologies while incorporating customer requests into the roadmap strategy.

+ Drive execution on the delivery of new products to customer-specified timelines with heavy cross-functional communications and business stakeholder management.

+ Utilize Lean Innovation and Stage Gate processes, with Learning Plans and Proof Points, for all product development projects.

+ Travel 30% of the time, domestically and internationally to other CMPT sites and to leading customers, is required.

+ Own the safety culture, process safety, and understand/manage all relevant safety protocols (MOC) required for researchers.

KEY INTERFACE ROLES

The role will involve close collaborations with CMPT’s commercial, finance, legal, human resources, and communications functions. Building strong relationships with peer R&D Leaders across E&I, and with Technology Director peers at leading customers, are a must.

ACCOUNTABILITIES

+ Ensure R&D serves as the Partner of Choice for all CMPT customers by proactively solving their CMP-related challenges, above and beyond product transactions, and enabling their success.

+ Deliver new slurry and pad products that deliver business growth and are necessary to achieve the business profit objective.

+ Maintain a robust IP strategy and associated patent estate to protect and sustain the innovation investment.

+ Direct application development in collaboration with Marketing and Field Service Engineering to drive qualifications of existing and new CMPT products.

+ Utilize Advanced Characterization and Fundamentals to map CMP process physics and to understand functional mechanisms unpinning the performance of CMPT products.

+ Maintain 3-5 year innovation strategy and roadmap that specifies advances in CMPT process and product technologies to meet future customer needs.

+ Develop a 3-5 year resource enhancement strategy that outlines future CMPT R&D capital, equipment, and expertise needs.

+ Manage the CMPT R&D capital and operating expense budgets to the business profit objective commitment.

+ Own the safety culture and all other DuPont Core Values for the ET global organization in collaboration with respective site leadership teams. Ensure that company safety culture/protocols are understood and supported by all ET personnel.

GROUP ROLE

The mission of the CMPT R&D team is to collaborate with business partners and top tier customers to deliver industry-leading CMP products that enable advanced logic and memory node performance and best-in-class cost of ownership. The team is also accountable to solve customer challenges with existing CMP products and to deliver solutions based on the Partner of Choice process and mindset.

ROLE (JOB) SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS

+ Ph.D. degree in the Chemical, Physical Science, or Engineering disciplines.

+ Minimum of 5 years product research and development experience with a successful customer engagement and proven product development track record, and at least 5 years of people leadership experience are required.

+ Experience with semiconductor technologies, CMP process technology, and CMP consumables, or a willingness to come up to speed in these areas within 6-12 months through intensive study, is required.

+ Experience with product commercialization framework (PCF) or other stage gate type processes is required.

+ Six Sigma Green Belt or higher certification is preferred.

+ The role is based in Newark, DE. Relocation benefits will be provided for the selected candidate within the USA as necessary.

EXPERIENCE & ATTRIBUTES

+ The role will require working knowledge of the semiconductor market, technologies, and products, particularly in the area of CMP.

+ The role will require a demonstration of strong technical acumen and track record in developing new products in close collaboration with customers.

+ Knowledge and experience in materials and DOE methodology are preferred.

+ Proven track-record of Project Management experience for developing new products with engaged customers on an accelerated time scale.

+ Strong interpersonal effectiveness and customer interaction capability is required

+ Experience managing an organization to ensure high performance in a dynamic technology and market place, and prioritizing talent development.
