at Christiana Care Health System in Newark, Delaware, United States
ChristianaCare's Gene Editing Institute is expanding and seeks to recruit two research scientists, postdoctoral fellows, to join the innovative team elucidating the mechanism of CRISPR-directed gene editing in human cells. With direct guidance from the Director of the Gene Editing Institute, the research scientists/postdoctoral fellows will participate in projects focusing on the identification of new gene editing tools with a specific focus on expansion of the CRISPR/Cas gene editing portfolio. The projects will also be centered on elucidating the regulatory circuitry that surrounds CRISPR-directed gene editing in human somatic and progenitor cells. These research projects into great directly with the clinical development team focused on therapeutic approaches to solid tumors. The successful candidates will be expected to work independently on the design and execution of molecular and cellular experimentation in the state-of-art facility, and assessment of results statistically and computationally. Experience in the cultivation of iPSCs and/or progenitor cells will be considered a plus in the evaluation process.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Work with gene editing tools including programmable nucleases and synthetic DNA, including novel oligonucleotides composed of RNA and DNA.
Cultivate and utilize progenitor cells for gene editing experiments.
Design and test at the molecular and cellular level, the outcomes of gene editing using novel gene editing tools.
Participate and coordinate research activities with international collaborators.
Develop new experimental procedures based on cell free extracts and cell-based assays.
Work directly with Dr. Eric Kmiec, the Director of the Gene Editing Institute and execute mutually designed experiments to uncover novel gene editing systems were used in human and mammalian cells.
Present research findings, including preparation of research reports and abstracts, dissemination at national and international scientific conferences and publication of manuscripts by peer-reviewed scientific journals.
Contribute to the conception design and writing of research grants to obtain outside funding in support of research protocols and performs literature reviews and searches. The successful candidate will initially serve as scope principal investigator with the possibility of evolving into an independent researcher in the Gene Editing Institute
Maintains laboratory notebook containing laboratory protocols used and results derived for each experiment, carefully organized and ordered by project and date and keeps highly technical records of all experiments.
Performs assigned work safely, adhering to established departmental safety rules and practices; report to supervisor, in a timely manner, any unsafe activities, conditions, hazards, or safety violations that may cause injury to oneself, other employees, patients and visitors.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
PhD in medical and molecular biology, biochemistry, cell biology, or a closely related field. 0 - 4 year experience.
Candidates should have authored at least two first author publication in reputable journals; In vitro and in vivo CRISPR research experience are a plus but familiarity with molecular biology and cell techniques are critical.
This position involves direct experimentation, bench work, centered on the discovery of novel gene editing systems and there are application in human and mammalian cells.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILL, AND ABILITY REQUIREMENTS:
First-hand or familiarity with CRISPR/Cas9/Cas12a/Cas13s gene editing systems.
Knowledge in mechanistic aspects of DNA repair and recombination pathways in human cells.
Experience in research methodology, principles and procedures
Ability to use independent judgment to develop model concepts and approaches
Ability to gather and analyze statistical data and generate reports.
Strong understanding of scientific principles
Project management skills
