Job Description

PRIMARY FUNCTION:

Responsible for the timely and accurate coding for reimbursement and data collection purposes. Coordinates daily responsibilities of coding and support staff.

 

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Coordinates daily coding and coding support functions of Health Information Management Services.

 

Receives / prints management exception reports, reviews discrepancies and makes corrections as necessary. Identifies opportunities to reduce inpatient DNFB. Acts as a liaison between facility, physician and ancillary departments for resolution of problematic accounts.

 

Develops coding policies and procedures in accordance with CMS, AHIMA, AHA, and AMA guidelines.

 

Coordinates installation and performs training of coding/abstracting computer system enhancements and updates.

 

Trains coding staff on current guidelines, regulations, codes, payment schemes and data element requirements.

 

Analyzes and reports trends for improvement opportunities.

 

Applies Focus PDCA methodology to improve coding section performance.

 

Responsible for database accuracy, queries, and report writing relating to coding and abstracting as delegated.

 

Verifies coding and abstracting accuracy by performing quantitative and qualitative reviews.

 

Codes inpatient and outpatient accounts as necessary to prevent backlog situations.

 

Provides input to Coding Supervisor and Coding Manager on coding staff performance appraisals.

 

Attends and participates in workshops/courses in order to provide education for physicians, ancillary departments and coding staff.

 

Performs assigned work safely, adhering to established departmental safety rules and practices; reports to supervisor, in a timely manner, any unsafe activities, conditions, hazards, or safety violations that may cause injury to oneself, other employees, patients and visitors.

 

Locates, retrieves, and files medical records and/or medical record information as deemed necessary.

 

Utilizes general office equipment and computer systems/software applications necessary to perform functions.

 

Performs other related duties as required.

 

SCOPE, PURPOSE, AND FREQUENCY OF CONTACTS:

Daily contact with coding staff, departmental management, and intradepartmental personnel.

Frequent contact with physicians, physicians office staff, clinical, and ancillary departmental staff.

Frequent contact with Information Services and Patient Financial Services staff.

Occasional contact with the public.

 

DIRECTION/SUPERVISION OF OTHERS:

Frequent coordination involving coding and coding support staff.

 

DIRECTION/SUPERVISION RECEIVED:

Immediate: Data Quality Manager

Department Head: Corporate Director, HIMS

 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

RHIA, RHIT or CCS certification or equivalent certification/degree.

College credits in medical terminology, anatomy, and physiology.

Three years coding experience in a Health Information Management Department or equivalent.

Experience with implementing and maintaining computer systems.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL, AND ABILITY REQUIREMENTS:

Knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, and disease processes

In-depth knowledge of inpatient coding guidelines and principles

In-depth knowledge of outpatient coding guidelines and principles

In-depth knowledge of the ICD and CPT nomenclatures and DRG payment structure

Ability to develop and lead teams

Knowledge of Encoding systems

Demonstrated computer skills and ability to utilize various software packages

Knowledge of alphabetical and numeric filing systems

Strong communication and interpersonal skills

Ability to instruct in a classroom setting

 

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

Ability to work with minimal supervision

Must be self motivated with strong organizational skills

Ability to make decisions and apply judgment

Must be flexible, versatile, and adaptive

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Daily lifting and pulling of medical records

Sitting for long periods of time and utilizing a computer

 

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Routine Office Environment

Frequent deadline situations requiring the incumbent to work under pressure
