What You’ll Contribute

Director, Data Risk Oversight is a key leadership position within Sallie Mae’s Risk Management team, reporting to the Chief Credit Risk Officer. As second line of defense (risk) lead on enterprise data programs, the Director will seek to deliver independent risk oversight of the data program and activities of the Company. The role will develop and execute risk assessments across the data process- data quality risk, data movement risk, data fit for purpose risk and data governance to ensure process are operating per requirements and, identify any risks which may have unintended consequences. Ensure effective analysis and measurements of key data risks are established, measured, and monitored; program updates are shared with CRO, Executive leadership and regulators. Additionally, be the risk lead on data program enhancements, issue identification and remediation of findings from other internal/external reviews. As a data thought leader, ensure the company stays up to date on emerging regulatory expectations and data control management capabilities.

What You’ll Do


% of Time Spent

• Risk Review and Challenge

· Leads 2nd line oversight of Enterprise Data Governance program including tracking and testing.

· Manages effective oversight of data governance, policies, processes, and standards, ensuring risk-based alignment and business unit data activities align with the objectives of broader Enterprise Data Risk Management program.

• Thought Leadership

· Provides technical and risk thought leadership to internal business units and vendor data providers around data-reporting-analytics initiatives to assist in risk-based prioritization of lineage, data dictionary and data quality requirements.

• Data Controls around Change Management

· Supports key initiatives around data warehouse and related data platforms, ensuring data traceability, data transformation risk mitigation and scalability are addressed.

• Business Transformation

· Supports Operational Excellence and environment rationalization around data automation, data reconciliation, lineage traceability and transformations. Specifically, for 2nd line (risk) organization lead data control proficiency across all risk categories.

• Regulatory Deliverables and Stakeholder Management

· Interfaces with business partners and regulators on data program reviews and exams. Document and communicate results to senior leadership.

Required Qualifications:

What You Have

Minimum: Indicate minimum education, skills and experience required.

• Undergraduate degree, preferably in Business, MIS, or Computer Science

• 7+ years of relevant experience of which 3+ years in data governance.

• Experience in data management – Enterprise Data Governance, Information Governance, Business Intelligence and Data Quality.

• Knowledge of tools and their interplay within Enterprise Data Governance (Metadata, data discovery, master data).

• Self-sufficiency in data querying and independent reviews.

• Understanding of regulatory data environment.

• Strong oral and written communication skills as well as presentation skills with ability to conduct presentation to various levels of management.

• Organizational skills with attention to details.

• Ability to meet deadlines, prioritize assignments and manage multiple projects.

• Strong team player who partners with stakeholders and works effectively toward solutions.

Preferred: Indicate “nice to haves” regarding education, skills, and experience.

• Consumer banking experience

• Experience in data security or compliance

• Experience or exposure to Agile principles and methodology.
