Century Engineering, Inc. is seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Building Inspector to perform technical building inspections and plan examining work to enforce compliance with specifications, building codes, regulations and ordinances. The person that fills this role will also be expected to research new construction materials and methods; review plans for compliance with city, state, and federal rules and regulations; and provide information to and work with architects, engineers, contractors and builders, to resolve problems.


Examine plans and specifications of new construction, additions and alterations to residential and commercial buildings to determine compliance with the provisions of applicable city, state, and federal construction codes, ordinances, rules, and regulations

Inspect foundation, concrete, steel, masonry, wood construction, framing, plastering, routine plumbing, heating and electrical installations and a large variety of other complex and routine building system elements

Apply technical knowledge and follow proper inspection techniques to examine workmanship and materials and detect deviations from plans, regulations and standard construction practices

Maintain files, records, and reports regarding inspection and plan check activities and findings

Confer with and provide information and assistance to architects, engineers, contractors, builders, and the public in the field and office; explain and interpret applicable codes, ordinances, and zoning regulations

Attend and participate in project meetings

Review plans to ensure they meet building codes, local ordinances, zoning regulations, and contract specifications

Create detailed comparisons of the conditions of the different building sections, including discrepancies in color, weight, size, and grades of the materials used

Measure dimensions and verify level, alignment, or elevation of structures or fixtures to ensure compliance to building plans and codes

Frequently drive throughout the workday to project sites to complete tasks

Perform other related duties as required


Minimum 3 years of experience in the building construction trades, building technology industry, or related field preferably in the state of Delaware

Minimum of an Associate Degree preferably in a construction/engineering related field

PMP or CCM preferred but not required

Specialized training in the building trades and/or code enforcement desirable

Must be knowledgeable in building-related codes and ordinances enforced by the City, including the uniform building, electrical, fire alarm, sprinkler systems, plumbing and mechanical codes; general zoning and land use laws; general grading practices; principles and techniques of building inspection and plans examining work; principles of structural design and engineering mathematics; and major types of building construction, materials and methods

Demonstrated knowledge of accepted safety standards and methods of building construction for commercial buildings

Familiarity with computer-based programs, including Microsoft office, and CAD/Microstation software

Knowledge of general zoning and land use laws, general grading practices, codes and ordinances related to disabled and public access

Ability to read blueprints, drawings and plans, and enforce regulations firmly and impartially

Excellent written and oral expression in English

Valid driver's license with demonstrated safe driving practices

Local residency or ability to relocate at your own expense
