CONTEXT OF THE JOB:

The National Institutes of Health Institutional Development Award (IDeA) program has funded a 5-year, -$12 million program titled, ;Center of Biomedical Research Excellence (COBRE) in Cardiovascular Health. Under the general direction of the Director, the Research Associate will be an integral part of the COBRE Research Core providing oversight of graded exercise testing, 24-hour blood pressure monitoring, and other testing in support of the COBRE research projects. The Research Associate will perform these tasks individually or in collaboration with research teams, including application of generally accepted procedures, collection and analysis of data, and recognition of and response to procedural problems. He/She will also conduct research requiring the application of protocols, which carry out human subjects research.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

+ Performs a variety of complex technical and other duties involved in conducting physiological testing, experiments, and assessments to obtain data in support of research activities.

+ Performs research assignments involving a number of variables and applies procedures, equipment, and technology that involve complex functions or features.

+ Evaluates, selects, and applies standard scientific techniques and procedures and modifies and develops new procedures to accomplish a variety of research assignments.

+ Sets up, calibrates, and maintains equipment. Orients others in use of equipment, both orally and in writing. Procures and maintains inventory of supplies.

+ Keeps detailed notes, instructs others on this and makes periodic reports.

+ Helps to set and maintain proper laboratory safety standards.

+ Trains new employees, graduate students, and undergraduate students.

+ Prepares tables, graphs, and reports.

+ Maintains metabolic cart and performs graded exercise testing of healthy and diseased research participants in collaboration with clinical staff.

+ Compiles and analyzes data and interprets results.

+ Assists in the preparation of manuscripts and research proposals. Performs other related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

+ Bachelors degree in Exercise Science/Exercise Physiology with two to three years of graded exercise testing experience. Masters degree preferred.

+ Experience in Human Subjects research.

+ Effective organizational, and communication skills (verbal and written); Ability to work well with others.

+ Ability to interpret and follow written and verbal instructions;

+ Requires excellent comprehension, communication, and grammatical skills in English and how to use knowledge in scientific articles. Knowledge of research methodology, principles and procedures, of current technological developments/trends;

+ Knowledge of scientific approach and methodologies, of the use and maintenance of laboratory facilities and/or equipment.

+ Ability to use independent judgment to adapt and modify research concepts and approaches to specific projects, to gather and analyze statistical data and generate reports.

+ Willingness to learn new skills.

+ Ability to investigate and analyze information and to draw conclusions, to understand and follow specific instructions and procedures.

+ Ability to read, understand, follow, and enforce safety procedures, to develop and follow research methodology and protocol.

+ Skill in the use of personal computers and related software applications.

+ Ability to design, organize, and coordinate scientific research projects.
