Christiana Care is recruiting for a Phlebotomy Specialist to work full time day shift. This position is located at Christiana Hospital in Newark, Delaware. Hours are 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Every third Saturday, 7:30 to noon, required.
To interview, register and order laboratory tests along with processing patient specimens on outpatients at the Outreach Laboratory site. To perform venipunctures, finger sticks, and/or heel sticks to obtain blood for testing.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
Performs successful venipuncture, micro-procedure and bleeding times using established procedures on adult and pediatric patients
Interviews and registers outpatients accurately in the HIS, recognizing the use of the alternate guarantor for geriatric patients, obtaining the correct insurance information and patient signature on any required forms by utilizing the Compliance Checker as appropriate
Follows established procedures for proper identification of patients, greeting all patients in a courteous manner introducing self and calling patient by name
Properly labels and processes patient specimens prior to arrival in clinical laboratory
Demonstrates skills and knowledge necessary to provide care appropriate to adult and geriatric patients, including the ability to obtain and interpret information to identify patient needs, and to provide the care needed
Interprets physician's oral and written test orders in an accurate manner
Follows-up with physician's office to clarify any confusion or question, including resolution of any medical necessity and/or diagnosis issues
Handles all telephone requests in a courteous manner, documenting the call
Selects correct encounter and orders laboratory tests accurately in the LIS
Works cooperatively with lead phlebotomy specialist and co-workers and maintains a good rapport with other departments
Performs successful heel sticks, using established procedures, on neonates and infants
Plates patient specimens for microbiology cultures
Transports patient specimens to clinical laboratory as necessary
Performs Point of Care Testing (POCT) on Glucose Tolerance Test (GTT) patients
Rotates working schedule as needed within CCHS as required
Maintains daily log sheets
Collects master white billing forms and delivers to Cashier
Maintains supplies and adequate inventory of medications
Reviews Safety manual and Infection Control manual annually.
Completes all mandatory in-service education
Attends departmental in-service meetings as required
Performs assigned work safely, adhering to established departmental safety rules and practices. Reports to supervisor, in a timely manner, any unsafe activities, conditions, hazards, or safety violations that may cause injury to oneself, other employees, patients and visitors
Performs other related duties as assigned
Education and Experience Requirements:
High School Diploma or equivalent required
Successful completion of a Phlebotomy Training Program required; or at least one year of comparable phlebotomy experience
Experience required in the following: performing phlebotomy procedures including venipuncture, finger and heel stick
Experience with patient registration and test order entry
Experience and understanding of insurances
Ability to interpret provider's oral and written test orders
Knowledge of medical terminology
Skill in interpersonal relations; setting a patient at ease, interacting with children
Ability to exercise good judgment in coordinating phlebotomy collections in an efficient manner
BLS (CPR) Certification required; or must obtain within 60 days of hire
