at DuPont in Wilmington, Delaware, United States
Research Investigator – Reactive Chemical
DuPont Core Analytical Sciences (CAS) is excited to announce the position of Reactive Chemicals (RC) Subject Matter Expert (SME). The successful candidate will join the existing focused team to help DuPont clients and partners appropriately quantify and manage the reactive chemical hazards associated with their facilities by designing and/or executing experiments (guided by thermodynamic principles and plant operating conditions), performing data interpretation, and providing consulting support.
The successful candidate will have a passion for safety and is interested in becoming educated in all aspects of RC, however the candidate will focus their energy on becoming an expert and lead in a sub set of the technology. The RC discipline covers a wide range of techniques and disciplines. Activities can be as diverse as providing training on how to build a chemical/material compatibility chart, to executing a limiting oxygen study for dust explosion hazards or generating and interpreting high pressure and temperature runaway data for relief design.
In addition to providing high quality and timely safety support, the RC lab also assists in: product scale up, process development and troubleshooting with detailed calorimetric studies. Process development and scale up projects are routinely part of a larger effort where additional analytical techniques may be leveraged (e.g. online Raman spectroscopy).
In all instances, the successful candidate will have a presence in the lab and will apply thermodynamic, kinetic data and principles to process scenarios to minimize the risk of runaway reactions, fires or explosions in DuPont processes.
Beyond the lab presence, the successful candidate will serve as an internal resource, championing RC concepts, develop training materials and provide training to educate the DuPont community of RC hazards and effective methods to manage them.
In this position, the successful candidate will train/mentor/supervise analytical technicians and/or associates in routine and non-routine duties; write clear, cogent reports drawing appropriate conclusions from data; and consult with current/potential customers. Building and maintaining analytical connections both internally and externally will be important to success in this position.
