• Installs, programs, maintains, and repairs electronic systems, locks, door closers and panic exit devices.

• Makes and/or installs new parts as required.

• Tests and repairs electronic systems such as door alarms, card access and

mechanical locking systems.

• Opens locks for which there is no key or combination is unknown; changes lock

combinations as necessary.

• Identifies keys; makes new or duplicate keys from pattern or code.

• Maintains equipment according to manufacturer’s recommendations and generally accepted department standards.

• Maintains key records and security of keys, patterns, codes and combinations.

• Prepares work reports in accordance with departmental standards; maintains

record keeping and maintenance of logs.

• Opens safes, resets combinations, and repairs malfunctions.

• Performs routine maintenance of equipment and systems.

• Uses technology based systems to access e-mail, input information, and receive work instructions and other administrative information including electronic payroll forms, work schedules and CMMS information.

• Ensures shop owned equipment is in proper working condition.

• Occasionally operates computerized sign and engraving machine, cutter and edger equipment to fabricate signs and fill requests; installs fabricated signs according to university signage standards. Assists in ordering materials necessary to maintain stocking levels to fill daily sign requests.

• Assists in the processing all sign requests in a timely manner; ensures requests conform to University signage standards.

• When necessary, provides assistance to customers at job site to evaluate and select sign type necessary to fill request.


• High school diploma, GED, or equivalent with a minimum four (4) years journeyman experience as a locksmith.

• Minimum two (2) years’ experience in the repair and maintenance of locks, door checks and related hardware, and in making and duplicating keys.

• Ability to work with various computer software systems; ability to work with computer signage equipment.

• Ability to work from schematics and drawings; advanced math skills including knowledge of measurements and conversions; basic computer skills; basic knowledge of electrical principles and systems and a familiarity in the use of electrical testing equipment; ability to read, understand and work from complicated drawings, specifications and use various types of precision measuring instruments.

• Must have the skills and knowledge of preventative and applied maintenance techniques.

• Must have operational and maintenance knowledge of small format interchangeable core systems.

• Requires working knowledge of use, care, and safe handling of tools, equipment, and materials commonly used in the trade.

• Must be capable of providing technical leadership to outside vendors and other University personnel.

• Requires ability to comprehend and follow verbal and written instructions.

• Must be capable of working independently and prioritizing tasks in order to meet the needs of the unit and its customers.

• Requires interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate effectively and interact with people of all ages and diverse backgrounds.


• The primary physical environment requires the employee to work both inside and outside in both extreme heat and cold conditions, as well as conditions that are wet/humid, dry and during times when temperatures are below 32?F for more than one-hour periods.

• Employee must lift, tug, pull, and transport, with or without assistance, both small and heavy equipment and material, as necessary.

• The employee may be required to bend, squat, stretch and stand and/or work in cramped areas for prolonged periods of times while repairing equipment both at floor level, overhead, and/or in confined space areas.

• Environment may frequently include dust and/or airborne particles and occasionally loud noise, electricity/high voltage, chemicals, gases, fumes, and vibration. For this reason, employee is required to wear designated personal protective equipment to include, but not limited to, ANSI-approved safety eyewear, hardhats, gloves, hearing protection, and footwear to prevent exposures to hazardous materials, noise, dust and/or airborne particles.

• Must be able to wear a dust mask and/or designated respirator when required as personal protective equipment in order to make access to certain confined spaces.


• Requires the ability to routinely move, lift, and/or carry, with or without assistance, equipment, parts, and job related materials exerting 50 to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 25 to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or 10 to 20 pounds of force constantly.

• Requires the ability to accurately discern colors.

• The employee is required to climb stairs and use 12-ft ladders.


• Must possess a valid motor vehicle operator’s license in order to drive University of Delaware vehicles to and from job sites.
