Our work depends on a Systems Administrator joining our team to support Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) activities at our GDIT Towson Maryland office (preferred) however telecommuting is an option.

As a Cloud Operations Administrator supporting the Medicare Secondary Payer Systems Contractor (MSPSC), you will be trusted to work on maintaining our organization’s operational workflows and be responsible for the upkeep, configuration, and reliable operation of the MSPSC systems within the CMS AWS cloud environment. This includes identifying network issues, create and maintain systems documentation, and provide critical analysis for tuning recommendations for optimal system performance.

Your success will be measured through demonstrated continual learning of how the application works, participation in troubleshooting calls, asking relevant questions, eventual ability to quickly determine the probable trouble areas given an operational scenario, such as specific error messages seen in specific applications etc. The ability to set up automated monitoring and alerting across the entire application stack and infrastructure including core server and network metrics like CPU, disk usage, latency, request rates etc. to be able to detect any incidents in a proactive manner.

In this role, a typical day will include:

+ Communicate and collaborate with the multiple teams and external partner contractors within the COB&R program to solve operational and system performance issues that are distributed and highly complex in nature.

+ Ability to work together with a team of other systems administrators, to include information and knowledge sharing.

+ Ability to ask questions and develop innovative solutions/ideas to better the AWS Operations.

+ Primary responsibilities:

+ Monthly maintenance coordination and execution,

+ Daily monitoring and alert response using the provided cloud based tools:

+ New Relic

+ Splunk


+ Any type of OS or application (web server etc.) log file analysis tools

+ Forensic skills to determine a plan of action to troubleshoot system performance and resolve a complex enterprise level web application and recommend corrective action

+ Analyzing and supporting infrastructure in AWS; containerization technologies such as Docker, Kubernetes, Amazon ECS

+ Java application experience, executing and troubleshooting Java application deployment procedures

+ Deployments using Jenkins and/or GITOps.


+ BA/BS (or equivalent experience).

+ 8+ Years of relevant experience as a Systems Administrator. Desired Experience and Skills such as:

+ Microsoft Office – Documenting current environment and ongoing maintenance of documentation

+ Microsoft SharePoint – Documenting current environment and ongoing maintenance of documentation

+ Understanding of how HTTP works

+ Basic understanding of TCP/IP

+ Linux Server Administration experience: RHEL, Amazon Linux 2:

+ Knowledge of create/executing scripts in languages such as Bash, Python or Powershell

+ Bash command line – demonstrate thorough knowledge and experience

+ How to configure password-less SSH using public/private keys

+ How to monitor and troubleshoot running processes

+ System log file knowledge – where log files are located and what they contain etc.

+ How to monitor and remedy low Operating System resources

+ EC2/AWS experience – lifecycle, attached storage, instance type etc.


+ Networking:

+ Working knowledge of network topology and subnetting

+ Familiarity with the OSI network model

+ VPC/AWS experience – understand how VPCs, subnets and security groups work together

+ High level knowledge of how AWS load balancers work

+ High level knowledge of how AWS auto scaling works

+ Recommended Certifications:

+ AWS Cloud Practitioner, AWS Solutions Architect, AWS SysOps. Administrator Associate, Security +; Network +; and/or MCSA

+ Familiarity with databases, to include PostgreSQL, My SQL, SQL Server and Oracle.

+ Security clearance level is not required for this position.

+ Candidate must possess US Citizenship or Green Card holder to be considered for this position.
