To perform secretarial duties associated with the process of distribution of surgical pathology, cytology, bone marrow, coagulation and autopsy reports, and to support the administrative activities required of the Christiana Hospital Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Functions as a receptionist greeting and directing visitors to the Pathology Administration office.
Prepares cases for inter and intradepartmental conferences.
Types frozen section reports into the final report for the pathologist.
Performs a history search on all surgical cases, forwarding to the pathologist responsible for the case.
Enters previous, non-computer diagnoses into the Laboratory Information System. Updates patient registration information to include consulting physicians as appropriate.
Transcribes outside consultation reports/letters for all pathologists at Christiana Hospital.
Distributes anatomic pathology reports, charts, files, and any others to the appropriate recipient in timely fashion.
Coordinates and sends patient specimens for specialized testing.
Packages specimen send outs and mails via Federal Express.
Enters the results of send-out specimens into the Laboratory Information System. Distributes these reports along with a copy of our anatomic pathology report to all mail distributions following verification by the pathologist/hematologist.
Handles incoming calls, forwarding them appropriately or taking and relaying accurate messages.
Responds to patient requests for slides and reports.
Prepares cases for pathologist review and properly packages slides to be mailed/picked-up.
Maintains proper documentation of all slide send outs.
Gathers data for legal cases.
Returns slides to other institutions maintaining proper documentation. Any written report generated as a result of Christiana Care review of this material will be forwarded with the slides.
Maintains surgical, autopsy and requisition slip files.
Orders supplies as required.
Performs assigned work safely, adhering to established departmental safety rules and practices; reports to the supervisor in a timely fashion any unsafe activities, conditions, hazards, or safety violations that may cause injury to oneself, other employees, patients or visitors.
Performs other related duties as directed.
SCOPE, PURPOSE, AND FREQUENCY OF CONTACTS:
Frequent contact with physicians and physician office personnel related to anatomic pathology reports. Frequent contact with patients requesting material for consultation.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
High school graduate or equivalent
Microsoft Office including Word and Excel spreadsheets
Typing skills 45 wpm
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of clerical methods and techniques.
Knowledge of office equipment and machines.
Knowledge of basic medical terminology.
Ability to prioritize assignments and work independently.
Ability to utilize information to accurately identify patient data.
Ability to verbally communicate in a clear and understandable manner.
Ability to courteously and efficiently handle all telephone requests.
Ability to follow written and verbal procedures.
Ability to maintain patient confidentiality.
Intermittent sitting, standing, walking, and bending. Extended exposure to computer screen.
Generally pleasant medical office environment. Limited potential for exposure to the danger of infection and toxic chemicals.
