The GM&T WBU delivers technological solutions (molecules, equipment and services) to support the new markets of energy transition, maritime logistics and scientific exploration, in order to accelerate Air Liquide sustainable growth.

Job Responsibilities


The mission of the Advanced Technology Solutions (ATS) group at ALaS Newport is to facilitate innovation of membranes and membrane manufacturing processes through new product and process development. This is achieved through strong competencies in polymer design, manufacture, characterization, and testing, principally aimed at gas separation membrane and cartridge development. The ATS group also serves the manufacturing organization to troubleshoot plant operations and customer applications that employ ALaS membranes.

To that end, the Mechanical Engineer will aid in the achievement of ATS group objectives through the application of solid engineering skills and developmental tools to support membrane and cartridge hardware design, new product and process development, testing, and validation. The Mechanical Engineer will also support identifying and solving issues in plant operation related to hollow fiber membrane manufacturing. The individual may also support root cause determination and development of appropriate corrective and preventive actions.

Duties and Responsibilities

Collaborates with product and process development teams to develop new hardware concepts and solutions as applicable to hollow fiber membrane module design and manufacturing

The work is generally project-based. The individual's role in any specific project may be adjusted based on the needs of the project.

The individual shall follow relevant group practices and procedures (e.g., use of Stage Gate), as appropriate.

Supports product and process development projects through rapid prototyping, engineering tests and evaluations, creating design layouts, modeling, and performing engineering calculations, as applicable

Supports production and process engineering teams with troubleshooting and recommended repairs or improvements to existing equipment for continually meeting production targets

Uses standard 2D and 3D engineering tools (e.g., CAD, Solidworks) to generate detailed drawings and models, incorporating best practices and maintaining high engineering drawing standards and rigor. Collaborates with more senior engineers to conduct FEA and related analyses where appropriate.

Participates in detailed design reviews, including preparation of relevant design summaries to facilitate peer review.

Interact with sales and marketing teams to provide support for customer related issues and sales opportunities.

Maintains configuration and revision control of all relevant engineering data via PDM.

Thoroughly documents all relevant data, calculations, and observations, and creates summaries for peer review. Draws conclusions and makes evidence-based recommendations to the development teams as appropriate.

Qualifications & Competencies



BS Mechanical Engineer with 2+ years of work experience in an engineering role

Demonstrates strong process and operational safety behavior at all times
