Technology Research Manager
Research and Development
The research / Instrumentation scientist is a critical position in the research team, leading end-to-end research typically within a specialized focused area. You will work on multiple research projects in collaboration with internal and external researchers and applied engineering teams.
You will be integral to all aspects of the research lifecycle such as formulating problems, gathering data, generating hypotheses, developing models, conducting experiments, synthesizing results, building Proof of Concepts, and communicating the significance of the research.
The ideal candidate will possess strong scientific expertise in Material Characterization and/or Electrochemical data and other relevant business experience. They will have the ability to think holistically and long-term across a broad spectrum of industry trends, issues and approaches to communicate scientific and technical objectives and priorities to a variety of internal and external stakeholders.
The candidate is required to have strong interpersonal skills and work with multiple internal stakeholders to drive and support highly visible and time-sensitive projects. Furthermore, the candidate will be able to partner flexibly within our organization to develop and deliver scientific, clinical, technical and commercial assessments and evaluations relevant to TA strategic goals.
Typical tasks of the position include, but are not limited to
Lead development and execution of partnership and portfolio strategy for Global Research, working closely with key stakeholders within R&D:
Build scientific leadership across relevant technology categories
Drive partnership creation and management
Foster a robust innovation system across Waters
Own the project portfolio management process for Global Research
Lead / manage research projects for TA business unit as defined by the President, BC and Head of R&D:
Lead cross-functional teams to successful outcomes with clear impact
Ensure that project collaborations with external consultants are well-managed
Prepare recommendations and present updates to leadership
Multi-task in balancing large book of work while ensuring consistent attention and prioritization of most critical and visible projects
Role model leadership and scientific rigor within the Waters culture
Support annual Strategic Planning Process:
Lead Research components of the strategy process in collaboration with business and function leaders through the matrixed organization
Facilitate workshops and prioritization exercises, provide constructive criticism and independent analysis, push to define targets and meaningful KPIs
Identify and assess major technology collaboration opportunities
Support identification and evaluation of organic and inorganic partnerships that could impact growth and profitability
Collect diverse perspectives and market research, including from external networks
The successful candidate will have a combination of knowledge, skills, and experience that would include the following
Advanced degree in Physics, Chemistry, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering or equivalent discipline required.
3-6 years of prior experience in materials Characterization techniques or Electrochemical testing, or other relevant industries strongly preferred
Experience managing global research projects
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, as well as the ability to engage deeply with experts on the science
Outstanding verbal and written communication skills with ability to influence the thinking of senior management
Team player and network-builder with desire to grasp new technology and change the world
Energetic, self-disciplined, creative and mature with a customer orientation and strong leadership potential
