Entity and activity description
Air Liquide Group has committed to carbon neutrality by 2050. On that route, the proportion of clean power in the Group energy mix needs to increase quickly and effectively. But that brings new uncertainties hence new kinds of financial risks. Hence, R&D is helping Air Liquide as a Group to quantify those risks and draw the optimal new green power sourcing strategies across different business portfolios and geographies, leveraging operational research and data science.
You will work in our Air Liquide innovation campus in Newark, Newark is a small city in New Castle County, Delaware, United States.
The Computational & Data Science team counts 15 full-time employees and 3 PhD / Master interns, representing 9 different nationalities. We all speak English in the workplace. A part of the team is located in Newark (DE) while the rest is spread between Montreal (CAN), Philadelphia (PA) and Houston (TX), close to our main business stakeholders.
The team conducts innovative research and Proof of Concept development across a strong and diverse portfolio of R&D projects, impacting many different business lines of the Group. Main fields of expertise are Data Science, Machine Learning & Deep Learning, Operational Research, Energy and Economics.
Missions and Responsibilities
Your mission, in that landscape:
Deliver a suite of stochastic models that will help simulate future realistic scenarios of power output from renewable assets (solar, wind, storage, hybrid systems..), Large Industry customers' demand and different energy market prices in the long term
Carry-out green power portfolio optimization analysis for a wide range of energy stakeholders in different business configurations (using and adapting existing R&D suite of optimization models), including wind, solar, storage power contracts & technologies
Quantify impact of Renewables penetration on energy markets pricing dynamics in different geographies (Europe and US as main focus)
Running exploratory tests to identify valuable and innovative insights from data
Research and implement cutting-edge techniques in operational and data science to solve real business problems related to energy transition and energy management.
Answer important business questions, by applying appropriate Data Science, Risk Quantification and Operations Research methods.
Synthesize and apply relevant insights from the academic literature on Operations Research to Air Liquide challenges and business-cases
Work both independently and collaboratively with Air Liquide Research scientists, engineers, energy experts and managers to accomplish complex tasks that deliver demonstrable value to the Group across geographies (mainly Europe and North America)
Interact with Air Liquide's Research Scientists and Energy Managers & Experts Contribute to the various phases of data science product development (business needs identification, design, data modeling, testing, tuning, deployment and monitoring) and potentially deliver your own PoCs ('Proof of Concept').
Competencies and Profile
Graduate from a top Engineering school, Business School or University with a master's degree in applied mathematics, operational research, data science & statistics or related field
English fluency is a must, Fluent French will be a big plus (Chinese or Dutch will be advantageous)
Proficient with Python (any other programming language will be a plus!)
Strong experience with classic libraries such as Pandas, Numpy, Scipy, Scikit-learn, Statsmodels, OR-Tools will be expected
Experience with empirical research and answering questions with data
