Summary of Position

To perform laboratory activities for the development of in vitro assays replacing animal models according to the instructions and overall guidelines, and where possible, using one’s own insight and initiative. Furthermore, to organize and execute one or more general tasks in GMP, SHE, technique- or laboratory coordination within the department.

+ Organizes and conducts (sub) projects by performing the development, troubleshooting, validation and transfer of new in vitro assays in consultation with the direct manager.

+ Chairs cross-functional project teams (including R&D, Regulatory Affairs, Quality, Ops, statisticians, etc.)

+ Applies broad and detailed technical and functional knowledge and conducts own experimentation.

+ Organizes, conducts and reports experiments if required with a new / complex study design and new techniques.

+ Interacts closely with fellow scientists within own and other departments. If required, interacts with external collaboration partners in consultation with the direct manager.

+ Supervises and trains trainees and new employees.

+ Monitors stock of biomaterial (e.g. antigens and monoclonal antibodies) for use in development.

+ Involved in review of detection agent-, cell characterization, recovery method-, assay development- and validation reports.

+ Fulfill general tasks within the organization related to GMP, SHE, IT and/or laboratory coordination.

Education Minimum Requirement:

+ Bachelor’s Degree in a Relevant Biological Area (Virology, Bacteriology, Microbiology, Biology, Biochemistry, Immunology)

Required Experience and Skills:

+ 2-3 years of Quality Control or Quality Assurance experience in the animal health industry

+ Familiarity with potency testing, particularly Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA) requirements on final product animal vaccines for USDA release and subsequent sale in accordance with regulatory ( USDA 9 CFR, VS Memorandums and Supplemental Assay Methods) and internal requirements (USDA (Special Outline, Outlines of Production and SOPs). In addition, familiarity with European Regulations regarding assay development and product release is preferred.

+ Experience working with biological assays (ELISA, Luminex, HPLC, Virus Titration, Bacterial Plate Count, PCR, and Toxin-Neutralization Testing)

+ Experience in the development of bioassays

+ Prior bench level laboratory expertise required

+ Expanded knowledge in at least one biological area; experience in other biological areas

+ Strong computer skills (Excel, PowerPoint, Word etc.) with excellent communication and writing skills

Preferred Experience and Skills:

+ Experience in the development of bioassays

+ Experience managing critical reagent inventories

+ Experience preparing protocols and reports

+ Capable of adapting to change and quickly learning new skills and concepts
