Senior Research (Instrumentation) Scientist
The goal of TA Instruments Research is to explore and advance cutting-edge innovations in thermal analysis, Rheology and Calorimetry, including physical testing as well as related fields like spectroscopy and High-performance battery cyclers, to develop and discover principles of impact to our customers in advanced materials, and battery testing.
The research / Instrumentation scientist is a critical position in the research team, leading end-to-end research typically within a specialized focused area. You will work on multiple research projects in collaboration with internal and external researchers and applied engineering teams.
You will be integral to all aspects of the research lifecycle such as formulating problems, gathering data, generating hypotheses, developing models, conducting experiments, synthesizing results, building Proof of Concepts, and communicating the significance of the research.
Work as an independent yet integral member of a team to develop and implement innovative and creative solutions that involve the development of electromechanical systems and enabling system demonstrations.
Lead all activities from concept generation and initial modeling, proof-of-concept experimental demonstrations, to integration of prototype systems.
Use Robust Design philosophy, Design of Experiments, and related analysis methods & tools to rapidly iterate different solution ideas.
Use proficiency in theoretical & experimental modelling of electro-mechanical systems and develop dynamic simulation models of early concepts, using standard tools such as MATLAB/Simulink.
Responsible for developing intellectual property including patents and assessments of technology IP landscape.
Present verbal and written proposals of technical ideas to internal technical and business leadership teams.
PhD in Physics, Chemistry, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering or equivalent.
Should have at least five years' experience in astronomical instrumentation development, with a broad background covering all phases of instrumentation activities including development of science and engineering requirements, optical, mechanical, and electronics design.
Excellent working knowledge of mechanical and electromagnetic systems to make leading edge contributions to current and future research and development programs.
Solid numerical and analytical programming and modeling skills (e.g., Python, C++, COMSOL, etc.)
Direct experience with the following:
Multiphysics modeling, especially Finite element analysis (ANSYS, COMSOL, etc.) in mechanical and/or electrical domains
Analog or mixed-signal electronics (including simulation tools such as SPICE)
Testing, debug, and analysis of high-performance systems (using tools such as MATLAB)
Experience developing complex mechatronic systems.
Physics Simulation tools, sensor prototype building, need based CAD modeling of sensor parts, electrical schematic reading and circuit board experience, LabVIEW/Python, instrumentation experience.
Good understanding of one or more analytical instrumentation techniques - Thermal Analysis, Rheology, Spectroscopy, Electrochemistry characterization.
