40 temporary fulltime Farmworker and laborer, crop openings. 4/20/2020 – 11/1/2020. Fifer Orchards, Inc. Wyoming, DE. Multiple worksites of intended employment Wyoming, Dover, and Magnolia, DE. Kent counties. Duties include: PEACHES/APPLES/SWEET CORN/ASPARAGUS/PUMPKIN/STRAWBERRIES/TOMATO- Harvesting, planting and caring for crops for several types of seasonal vegetables and fruits. Packing for shipment, Prune trees, crop care, and hand picking. Worker will attach harness, bucket or bag and pick while using ladder. Will pick according to grade, color, size, weight, and condition. Remove fruit so as not harm buds or tree branches. Desirable fruit should not be left on tree, dropped or removed from ground. Place fruit into bins carefully to prevent bruising fruit. Workers will thin and prune trees. Must be able to know by feeling the corn ear whether it meets the farm’s quality standards as to maturity. Workers must pick the top­most ear and determine by feel and observation corn smut, poor pollination, bird/raccoon damage and other quality issues. Shovel, haul, spread manure, dig holes, ditches and trenches. Manually plant, cultivate and harvest vegetables, horticultural specialties and field crops. Use hand tools such as shovels, trowels, hoes, tampers, pruning hooks, shears and knives. Duties may include tilling soil, applying fertilizers, transplanting, weeding, thinning or pruning crops, applying pesticides, cleaning, grading, packing and loading harvested product. Fruit pickers harvest, sort and gather fruit with their hands. Gently remove fruit from branches and vines making sure not to damage fruit Pickers are expected to work quickly and efficiently. Strawberries grow on low-lying plants, so you must have the endurance and strength to bend over for long periods of time. You will need to be kneeled for long periods of lime collecting the strawberries, once you have removed fruit from the plant you will need to place them in a bucket carefully so no injury may occur to them. Once the bucket is full you will empty into crates and boxes. Fruit pickers must be detail-oriented, fast and reliable so they can remove fruit without loss. Prune strawberry bushes by hand using pruning shears and toppers. Remove debris from fields using hoes, shovels, baskets, etc. Each worker must pick the plants clean of all ripe fruit. It’s the picker’s responsibility to sort good product from contaminated or rotting fruit to ensure produce is routed to appropriate facilities for cleaning and distribution. Planting- Workers will prepare fields for crop production and plant vegetables. Worker will take filled plant trays and place individual plants from tray into holes and cover with soil. Roots must be sufficiently into dirt. Using both hands, place a tomato stake between each ton1alo plant. Each stake must remain upright. Repeat process through entire row and field. Workers will maintain fields, cultivate, fertilize, irrigate, weed, and install irrigation pipes. Harvesting- Remove mature tomatoes from the plant with both hands (also remove calyx and stem from tomato) and place into bucket. When bucket is full take to tomato bins to be emptied. Worker will need to be able to grade and sort products. Plant seeds in rows or pumpkin hills. Plant directly in the ground, 1inch deep 4 to 5 seeds per hill. Harvesting • Workers must perform manual labor to hand cut and pack pumpkins. Pumpkins must be handled carefully to avoid cuts and bruises to fruit. Workers must cut the fruit off the vine with pruning shears leaving a 3 to 4 inch handle on the pumpkins. Never carry the fruit by their stems. Duties also include cleaning, loading and unloading harvested products. Grade and sort products according to factors such as color, appearance, feel and quality to ensure correct processing and usage. Clean and maintain work areas. Perform prolonged bending, reaching and lifting up to 60 lbs. Workers will perform assigned duties as instructed by their supervisor. Duties may vary from time to time. Applicants must be 18 years or older. This job requires a minimum of 3 months experience working on a vegetable and/or fruit farm, handling both manual and machine tasks associated with commodity production and harvest activities. Workers must be able to perform manual as well as mechanized activities with accuracy and efficiency. The majority of the workday is spent on one’s feet and outdoors. Workers must be able to climb, stand, sit, stoop, squat, kneel, crouch, bend (from the waist), push, pull, reach and lift. Work is performed outside and involves exposure to sun (hot and humid), wind, rain, soil, mud, dust, cold and other natural elements. Must be able to lift between 60 lbs. (All tools and supplies will be provided at no cost to workers) Workers should expect periods of little/no work during growing time. Repetitive Movements. Hours and days of work may vary due to weather conditions. Proper work attire is required. Workers must wear long sleeve shirts, long pants, no shorts, hard sole shoes, preferably boots, and no tennis shoes. Criminal background check. $13.34 /hr. 45 hrs. per wk. 6am – 3pm, M-F, 6am – 12pm, Sat; We will reimburse the worker for transportation cost (including travel insurance) and subsistence to the employers work site from the place of recruitment upon completion of 50 percent of the contract period. Transportation payment will be no less (and is not required to be more) than the most economical and reasonable common carrier transportation charges for the distances involved. Housing provided at no cost to workers and those workers in corresponding employment who are unable to return to their place of residence the same day. Tools, equipment and supplies provided at no cost to worker, for work day only, stored and maintained at farm. Employer guarantee 3/4 workdays of contract. Work outdoors, exposed to all weather conditions, hot, cold and possible rain, hours may fluctuate (+/-); possible downtimes and/or extended hours. Transportation & subsistence expenses ($12.46 daily w/o receipts, and $51.00 daily with receipts) to the worksites will be paid by the employer upon completion of 50% of the work contract, or earlier; or the current minimum subsistence amount published in the Federal Register, to a maximum of $51.00 per day or the current maximum amount published in the Federal Register to workers with acceptable receipts. Transportation between housing and worksite will be provided daily at no cost to the worker. The payroll period is weekly. Workers are paid on Friday by check. Employer will offer 45 hours per week. The employer will make all deductions from worker’s paycheck required by law. The workers are covered by Unemployment Insurance and Workers Compensation. The employer agrees that no extension of employment beyond the period of employment shown on the job order will relieve the employer from paying the wages already earned, or specified in the job order as a term of employment, providing transportation or paying transportation expenses to the workers home. The employer assures that all working conditions comply with applicable federal and state minimum wage, child labor, social security, health and safety, farm labor contractor registration and other employment related laws. Employer will comply with first week wage guarantee. Workers will be provided free and convenient cooking and kitchen facilities to workers to prepare their own meals; Return transportation and subsistence is paid upon completion of 100% of the work contract. Employer will provide transportation to grocery or laundry mat, if not provided facilities in housing. Employer will furnish the worker on or before each payday writing hours and earnings statements. Workers who voluntarily abandon employment or are terminated for cause, and where the employer provides timely notification to the NPC and DHS, will relieve the employer for subsequent transportation and subsistence costs and the 3/4th guarantee. The employer may terminate the work contract where services are no longer required for reasons beyond the employer’s control due to fire, weather, or other Act of God. The 3/4th guarantee will be provided between the start and termination dates, make efforts to transfer the worker to other comparable work acceptable to the worker, and, if transfer is not viable, provide outbound transportation and subsistence. The employer is to provide workers with a copy of the work contract, including any approved modifications, on the day work commences or as soon as practically possible.
