Job Description

Christiana Pharmacy Department is currently recruiting for a full time Certified Pharmacy Technician. This position is also required to work every other weekend and is a day/evening shift rotating position. Holidays as required.

The Christiana Hospital Pharmacy and the Wilmington Hospital Pharmacy operate 24 hours a day.


Under the direct supervision of the Pharmacist, performs assigned duties in support of the Pharmacy Department with an emphasis on accuracy, timeliness and patient safety.


  • Assists the pharmacist in providing timely, efficient, cost effective, and appropriate pharmaceutical care to the patient.
  • Refills patient medication bins through robot cart fill and manual picks; updates carts by including new orders, removing discontinued medications, and transferring medications Updates labeling of patient medication bins on admission, transfer and discharge of patients.
  • Delivers and exchanges 24-hour cart fill to nursing units at scheduled times. Checks medication storage areas for discontinued and discharged patient medications. Ensures that returned medications are placed back into stock.
  • Reorders medications in short supply and restocks picking station and other areas of the pharmacy. Maintains a clean and orderly work area; checks periodically for overstocked and outdated medications.
  • Fills floor stock orders and delivers to nursing stations. Restocks floor stock area. Receives and checks incoming supplier orders. Performs floor stock billing. Manufacturing/prepackaging; as required.
  • Answer telephone and greet personnel coming to pharmacy in a courteous and friendly manner. Refers problem and drug information inquiries to the pharmacist.
  • Prepare medications through appropriate compounding procedures and aseptic sterile techniques in accordance with USP 795, 797 and 800 in a timely manner.
  • Makes rounds of nursing areas for medication drop-off and pick up discontinued medications.
  • Sends prepared medications to nursing areas via pneumatic tube system on a timely basis for STATS and missing doses if the medication can be tubed. All routine medications will be hand delivered to patient bin.
  • Orient and train new pharmacy personnel.
  • Manage AcuDose inventory, including accurate selection and loading of medications.
  • Inspects medications at nursing units, including refrigerators and AcuDose machines. Ensures that medications are stored properly and that only in date medications are stored. Removes discontinued medication.
  • Recommends improvement of methods and procedures to supervisor.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned for emergency or other operational reasons for which the employee is qualified to perform to maintain appropriate level of pharmacy service.
  • Maintains a current knowledge of all departmental safety procedures
  • Performs assigned work safely, adhering to established departmental rules and practices. Reports to supervisor, in a timely manner, any unsafe activities, conditions, hazards or safety violations that may cause injury to oneself, other employees, patients and/or visitors.


- High school diploma or equivalent required
- Pharmacy Technician Certification (PTCB) is required
- A minimum of one year of pharmacy technician experience required
- Previous hospital pharmacy experience preferred
- Knowledge of generic and trade names of formulary drugs
- Ability to type and perform basic math calculations
- Computer experience preferred
- Strength and endurance is necessary to push the medicine carts back and forth to nursing stations
