The Department of Human Development and Family Sciences in the College of Education and Human Development (CEHD) at the University of Delaware invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in the area of Early Care and Education Policy. We welcome candidates with doctoral degrees in human development, education/early childhood education, public policy, psychology, public health, sociology, economics, prevention science, or other related social science fields. We are especially interested in applicants demonstrating a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion; an interest in working in an interdisciplinary academic environment; and a strong scholarly record focusing on the study of early care and education, early intervention, or health policies for young children.

Qualifications and Responsibilities. We seek applicants who conduct rigorous quantitative research focusing on areas of early care and education, broadly defined as the period of life from birth to age 8. Strong applicants will use longitudinal data to explore linkages between policy and outcomes related to child and family health and wellbeing. They will focus on critical issues in early care and education policy, such as (but not limited to) early intervention; homelessness and economic instability; access, quality, and equity; childhood trauma; child health and nutrition; outcomes of early childhood programs; and parent support.

We seek a candidate at the Assistant Professor level who will play a key role in establishing a research alliance with the state and institutionalizing an integrated, comprehensive data system for Delaware. The primary appointment will be in the Department of Human Development and Family Sciences, but we expect competitive candidates will have a joint appointment in collaborating units such as the Biden School of Public Policy and Administration, the Department of Economics, the Department of Sociology and Criminal Justice, or departments within the College of Health Sciences. Teaching opportunities will be in the bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral programs in the Department of Human Development and Family Sciences, and in a collaborating department, if applicable. Experience conducting research, providing mentorship, or teaching about issues that impact populations who have been marginalized is desirable.

Applicants will be considered from varied academic backgrounds and disciplines; however, candidates will be expected to demonstrate experience and quantitative lines of inquiry into early care and education policy. Experience with grant writing at the state and/or federal level is preferred. The start date of the position is August 2020.

CEHD is a vibrant, dynamic college, home to the Department of Human Development and Family Sciences and the School of Education. CEHD employs approximately 60 tenure track faculty who educate over 1500 undergraduates and 350 graduate students, and has more than $21.5M in external research funds from major funding organizations such as the Institute for Education Sciences, the National Science Foundation and the National Institutes of Health. CEHD has twelve research and public service centers working at the intersection of research and practice in areas such as teacher professional development, curriculum, school leadership and special education. College faculty conduct cutting-edge research designed to improve child, adult and family outcomes in health, social services, and early care and education, where our work spans mathematics education, language and literacy, the science of learning, sociocultural approaches, developing statistical and analytic methods, and educational policy.

Cross-disciplinary efforts are strong across the college and university. Three organizations in particular add to the strengths of UD’s cross-disciplinary work: (1) the Data Science Institute (DSI), a cross-campus initiative from all seven colleges at UD, which aims to accelerate interdisciplinary research in data science by offering interdisciplinary training in cutting-edge exploratory techniques such as video image analysis, (2) UD’s Partnership for Public Education (PPE) which embodies UD’s commitment to applying research to practice and policy, and (3) the Center for Research in Education and Social Policy (CRESP), whose mission is to conduct rigorous research, program evaluation, and policy analysis to inform decisions at the local, state, and federal levels. Also contributing to our work is UD’s Center for the Study of Diversity, which promotes academic research and scholarship that facilitates dialogues about and understanding of the social and academic impact of diversity.

The Department of Human Development and Family Sciences is an innovative, interdisciplinary department that focuses on the study of critical social issues affecting individuals, families, and communities, along with poverty and at-risk families, as well as teacher education and professional development in early childhood. The Department is affiliated with numerous policy and practice-focused early childhood centers that provide a context for data collection, data analysis, and the mentoring of undergraduate and graduate students, including the Delaware Institute for Excellence in Early Childhood, New Directions Early Head Start, the Laboratory Preschool, and the Early Learning Center. Other relevant centers in the Department or College include the National Leadership Consortium on Developmental Disabilities and the Center for Disabilities Studies.
