Open-Ranked Tenure/Tenure-Track Position in K-12 Education Policy
Position. The School of Education in the College of Education and Human Development (CEHD) at the University of Delaware invites applications for an open-ranked tenure/tenure-track position in the area of K-12 Education Policy. We welcome candidates with doctorates in any relevant social science field—including but not limited to education, public policy, economics, political science, psychology, and sociology. We are especially interested in candidates who have a demonstrated record and/or a strong commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion in their scholarship, teaching, and/or service.
Qualifications and Responsibilities. We seek applicants who are thought leaders with demonstrated excellence in scholarship, who conduct rigorous theoretically grounded empirical research on K-12 education policy issues, and who demonstrate a commitment to examining and contributing to policy or leadership for equitable educational opportunities and outcomes. Strong applicants will use longitudinal education data in their research and will focus on critical issues in K-12 education policy, such as (but not limited to) systemic inequities, school reform, school finance, accountability, school-to-prison pipeline, continuous improvement efforts, STEM access and persistence, improving educational opportunities for students with disabilities, etc.
We seek a candidate at the assistant, associate or full level who will provide leadership around establishing a research alliance with the state and institutionalizing an integrated, comprehensive data system for Delaware. The primary appointment will be in the School of Education, but we expect competitive candidates will have a joint appointment in one of our collaborating schools/departments: Biden School of Public Policy and Administration, the Department of Behavioral Health and Nutrition in the College of Health Sciences, Department of Economics in the Alfred Lerner College of Business and Economics, or the Sociology or Political Science Departments in the College of Arts and Sciences. Teaching opportunities will be in the EdD program, the PhD program in research methods and statistics, and the collaborating department, if applicable. The start date of the position is August 2020.
A PhD in social science—education, public policy, economics, political science, psychology, sociology, or related field—is required by start date.
The University of Delaware, College of Education and Human Development, and the School of Education. CEHD is a vibrant, dynamic college, home to the Department of Human Development and Family Sciences and the School of Education. CEHD employs approximately 60 tenure track faculty who educate over 1500 undergraduates and 350 graduate students, and has more than $21.5M in external research funds from major funding organizations such as the Institute for Education Sciences, the National Science Foundation and the National Institutes of Health. CEHD has twelve research and public service centers working at the intersection of research and practice in areas such as teacher professional development, curriculum, school leadership and special education. College faculty conduct cutting-edge research designed to improve children, adult and family outcomes in health, social services, early care, and education, where our work spans mathematics education, language and literacy, the science of learning, sociocultural approaches, developing statistical and analytic methods, and educational policy.
Cross-disciplinary efforts are strong across the college and university. Three organizations in particular add to the strengths of UD’s cross-disciplinary work: (1) the Data Science Institute (DSI), a cross-campus initiative from all seven colleges at UD, which aims to accelerate interdisciplinary research in data science by offering interdisciplinary training in cutting-edge exploratory techniques such as video image analysis, (2) UD’s Partnership for Public Education (PPE) which embodies UD’s commitment to applying research to practice and policy, and (3) the Center for Research in Education and Social Policy (CRESP), whose mission is to conduct rigorous research, program evaluation, and policy analysis to inform decisions at the local, state, and federal levels. Also contributing to our work is UD’s Center for the Study of Diversity, which promotes academic research and scholarship that facilitates dialogues about and understanding of the social and academic impact of diversity.
The SOE offers an undergraduate major in elementary teacher education and undergraduate minors in educational studies, educational technology, and urban education. The School supports several robust graduate programs at both the master’s and doctoral level, including a Ph.D. program in education, an Ed.D. program in educational leadership, and an Ed.S. program in school psychology.
In the last several years, faculty have garnered external funding in excess of $21 million and the college ranks among the top universities nationally in obtaining federal support for education research. Additionally, faculty in the School of Education are deeply engaged with K-12 schools and organizations that serve students and educational professionals in Delaware and other states. They are recognized for their contributions to local, state and national conversations about critical educational issues, lead organizations working to address those issues, and provide a range of supports to the agencies at the front lines of improving educational opportunities and outcomes. The faculty are a methodologically diverse and collegial group of nationally and internationally known scholars.
