Assistant Professor in Civil and Environmental Engineering

The University of Delaware (UD) Railway Engineering and Safety Program has developed a strong educational and research agenda on the application of data science to railway-related research. The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering invites applications from talented scholars pursuing interesting questions related to Railway Engineering and Operations, and Data Science. We are looking to fill a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Railway Engineering beginning August 16, 2020. Candidates must have a Ph.D. degree in civil engineering or a related field. The successful candidate will contribute to teaching at the graduate level in their area of expertise and at the undergraduate level in railway track engineering and operations. The candidate should also be capable of teaching introductory civil engineering courses. Candidates with a proven record of scholarly activities in all areas of railway engineering are welcome to apply. Of particular interest is research expertise related to data science and “big data”. The candidate will join a team of faculty working in the intersection of railway engineering and data science, and should possess a strong desire to work on interdisciplinary teams.

QUALIFICATIONS: We seek scholars who are committed to interdisciplinary research and teaching as well as diversity and inclusion. Candidates should show experience in or potential for securing external funding and working on integrated interdisciplinary teams.

We will consider a broad range of railway engineering and transportation areas, including but not limited to railway track engineering, rail operations, and railway safety. The candidate should have some background/experience in big data applications in railway engineering and operations.

Responsibilities of the position include:
• Building collaborative partnerships with the rail industry (e.g., railroad operators, planners, and maintainers), external entities such as research institutes, government agencies, and other universities, and also with faculty at the University of Delaware;
• Developing and teaching undergraduate and/or graduate courses in Railway Engineering and Operations and other related areas.
• Actively engaging in student recruiting, mentoring, research, scholarship and service activities;
• Seeking external funding to support research and scholarly activities;
