Materials Engineering Consultant (Job Number: 200706W-01)


The Global Engineering Technology (GET) team in DuPont’s Safety & Construction (S&C) business is seeking an experienced Materials Engineering Consultant to join us at our Wilmington, Delaware offices. The Safety & Construction business is home to iconic brands such as Corian®, Kevlar®, Nomex®, and Tyvek®, as well as innovative Water Solution and Performance Building Solution products. Members of GET provide critical engineering support to the design and improvement of S&C manufacturing processes across the globe.

The Materials Engineering Consultant will provide consulting services in metallurgy/materials engineering and related technologies to S&C’s manufacturing plant operations. Work will also include support of capital projects. Typical job tasks include materials selection (metallic and polymer), metallurgical engineering, equipment design, project support, fabrication and repair assistance, welding, equipment cleaning, failure analysis, corrosion evaluations, equipment inspection and condition assessment.

Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

+ Providing guidance and support on materials selection and specification for capital projects to meet requirements of process technology packages, including metals, plastics, fiber-reinforced plastics, lining and coatings, to determine the lowest life-cycle costs.

+ Providing expertise and knowledge in corrosion, surface engineering and wear, coating and linings, fabrication and repair, physical failure analysis and non-destructive testing.

+ Providing guidance and support on evaluations to determine the viability of materials for new and existing process applications, including laboratory tests, corrosion coupons programs, pilot plants etc.

+ Providing support on incident investigations and/or identification of failure modes.

+ Providing support to reliability/inspection engineers on the scoping of temporary and permanent repairs to meet requirements of applicable codes and standards regarding to material requirements.

+ Providing engineering consultant support to improve equipment performance reducing downtime caused by process condition, component failure, repair or inspection.

+ Working closely with Site Inspection groups to discuss failure modes and develop inspection plans.

+ Helping define and maintain the service index for piping systems.

+ Providing technical evaluation of relevant external suppliers.

+ Providing and/or developing training for material selection and material specification when required.



+ M.S. or Ph.D. in Metallurgy or Materials Engineering

+ 10 years’ experience (less may be acceptable for Ph.D. applicants) in the Chemical Process or related industries with a wide variety of materials of construction, working knowledge of welding and fabrication processes, repair procedures, failure analysis, corrosion processes, surface enhancement, ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code, ASME Piping Codes, and API Codes. Knowledge of related plant operational practices such as Process Safety Management, mechanical integrity, and reliability engineering.

+ Ability to adapt different materials to immediate problems and familiarity with allied mechanical engineering analysis capability (e.g., fracture mechanics and fitness-for-service techniques).

+ Knowledge of the fabrication process for different alloy families and fabrication involving specialized technologies.

+ Able to develop/review welding specs for alloys, perform detailed review of fabrication drawings, qualify/audit fabricators and suppliers of various product forms, fabrication involving specialized technologies, e.g., thermal spray, develop detailed inspection plans, and provide key input on selection of 3 rd party inspectors.

+ Strong interpersonal, networking, and teamwork skills for building consensus for problem solving, development of a client base, and to work well with people in a diverse, multi-disciplinary team environment at all levels of the company. Demonstrated to be proactive, self-motivated, and able to function independent of supervision.

+ Position will involve 20% travel on average. Some travel may be urgent and short-notice due to critical business needs.
