Mechanical Systems Engineer: Film and Web Handling Subject Matter Expert
The Global Engineering Technology (GET) team in DuPont’s Safety & Construction (S&C) business is seeking a Mechanical Engineer with an expertise in Film and Web Handling mechanics to join us at our Wilmington, Delaware offices. The Safety & Construction business is home to iconic brands such as Corian®, Kevlar®, Nomex®, and Tyvek®, as well as innovative Water Solution and Performance Building Solution products. Members of GET provide critical engineering support to the design and enhancement of S&C’s unique, proprietary manufacturing processes across the globe.
The Film and Web Handling expert will be a technology leader for all of S&C. The candidate will provide expert technical support in all aspects of film and web handling and converting processes throughout S&C. Work includes support and improvement of existing winders, un-winders, slitters, coaters, laminators, dryers, accumulators, and web spreaders. Knowledge of relevant equipment suppliers and fabricators is required. The role also involves design and installation of innovative new process equipment as part of research activities or capital projects. The candidate will also be required to learn and apply proprietary web handling software to model winding, web transport, web spreading, etc.
The role is based in Wilmington, Delaware and will involve travel. Travel needs will vary but may occasionally be as high as 40%.
+ Assist operations in yield, quality and capacity improvement as a machine design and web handling subject matter expert.
+ Assist operations in equipment diagnostics and troubleshooting related to web handling.
+ Modify and/or upgrade existing manufacturing equipment to improve capacity and/or product quality.
+ Understand the mechanics of winders and winding, especially 2-drum winders, as they relate to roll formation quality.
+ Understand and implement the principles of strain transport and tension control as they apply to various converting processes such as coating and drying.
+ Understand and apply nip and calendaring mechanics.
+ Specify new equipment for capital projects such as winders, unwinders, slitters, coaters, laminators, dryers, accumulators, web spreaders, etc.
+ Develop and maintain relationships with key DuPont suppliers and fabricators.
+ Review and/or write basic data, equipment specs, and scopes of work, which document the basis for web and film related capital projects and equipment design.
+ Work closely with plant operations and maintenance to include their input in the front-end loading (preliminary and conceptual engineering) process.
+ Lead mechanical designers in development of custom manufacturing equipment.
+ Have fundamental knowledge of machine safety and OSHA regulations. Participate in project process hazard analysis (PHA).
+ Work effectively with multi-disciplinary teams and locations.
+ Utilize Mathcad, Excel spreadsheets, Creo (formerly Pro Engineer) and other tools to complete feasibility studies and sound conceptual design.
+ M.S. or Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering. B.S. candidates with >10 years of in-depth film and web experience may be considered.
+ Demonstrated expert-level knowledge of Film and Web Handling Web Handling mechanics and associated equipment. Minimum of 5-10 years of relevant industrial experience required.
+ Strong technical, analytical and functional skills.
+ Good interpersonal and communication skills. Must work well in both self-managed and team environment.
+ Prior experience with the capital project process, from business planning through start-up and commissioning, is preferred.
+ Demonstrated knowledge of, or aptitude for learning, computer-aided machine design and analysis tools. Prior experience with Creo (formerly ProEngineer) is preferred.
